Vehicle Detail
This 1971 Karmann Ghia is a true survivor. An all-original VW classic, it has been stored for many years and has less than 85,000 original miles. It has been maintained by the previous owner as a weekend driver, only brought out on occasions. Email me if you want to see more pictures! EXTERIORThis KG features the original Amber/orange paint. It has been touched up on the drivers side door, and has some minor dents, but only noticeable under very close inspection. Even the engine bay and the trunk has the original paint intact. The clear coat is in great shape and is not peeling. The chrome bumpers are in great shape for their age. They have some haziness to them, but nothing that can’t be buffed out. From what I saw, there seem to be no major dents or bubbling to the visible areas. The emblems, louvers, and headlight trim rings are in great shape as well. The tires show some checking over the years, but they do not have any bald spots. There is some haziness and sun fading to one of the front corner lamps, but the rest are in very good condition. All lights function as they should. INTERIORThe interior has a perfect “survivor” feel to it. It features a Tobacco/Dark Brown interior. The seats seem to be original to the car, and are not torn up. The back seat has a functional storage area. The carpet shows some wear, but it still useable. Interior trim barely has any sunfading to it. The seatbelts seem to have been replaced at one point, as the slack comes from the lower portion of the strap as opposed to the shoulder area. The dash and door panels have the normal wear and tear of 40+ year old parts. Upper dash has some cracking on the cover, but I’m sure the understructure is in great shape. The gauge lights work, but they are faint. Turn signal indicators and hazard lights work as well. The radio is an aftermarket replacement, and no cuts/modifications have been made to the dashboard. The radio features an AM/FM tuner and a cassette player. STEERING/BRAKESThis Karmann Ghia features a manual steering linkage, but with a car this light, there’s really no need for power steering. There is little to no play on the steering wheel, and it drives straight and even. The brakes are standard, non-power brakes. The master cylinder and brake fluid have been inspected. There is little to no moisture in the brake system, and no leaks. Brakes are working fine as they should. The parking brake seems to need some minor adjustment on the rear passengers side RH, as there is a rubbing/clicking noise when the car is going in reverse. The noise is evident only when it is in reverse, and is found only on the passengers side. CHASSIS/SUPENSIONThe suspension has a 40+ year old technology behind it, and it is a classic car. But the car handles very well for its age, and the shocks are all still functional. The tires, as I’ve stated, show some wear to them, but no unevenness. The frame is nice and clean of any rust pitting. The wheels spin evenly, but the buyer may opt for new wheel bearings. ENGINE/TRANSMISSIONThe engine and transmission are both in great shape. The engine just had an oil change in the past week. It is still running strong, but if the buyer decides to drop a bigger motor in it, there will be no problem, as the car is smog-exempt. The drivetrain features a four speed manual transmission. It shifts upwards in all gears, and stays in gear firmly. It can downshift easily as well, and there are no slipping evident on the clutch. Overall, the car is in great shape, considering its age. The engine and transmission are low-mileage and will only need minor maintenance work, as with the rest of the car. This is great for someone who wants a car that can start up and be driven right away. A great daily driver!
