Vehicle Detail
General information ... and why I'm not keeping it in the family Please read this entire description carefully. I'm a bit OCD as you can tell by how clean I keep this truck, the number of books I've bought about it, and even the "3X FUEL" license plate I got for it ... but if I missed anything, let me know and I'll try to honestly and candidly answer your question(s). I buy a lot of stuff on eBay and seller integrity is very important to me. This is an exceptionally clean, heavy-duty work truck that was never used for towing or truly heavy work. It was my daily commuter until I changed jobs in March, then one of my daughters drove it until July when I put the truck on PNO (that daughter inherited a nice, low-mileage car that's much more appropriate for a college kid). Since then it's been in my way (I have too many vehicles and I live in a gated HOA). Because it's so reliable and clean, I considered giving it to one of my kids' 29-year-old boyfriend -- so he could work -- but since before I put it on PNO he's been sitting on his lazy rear, played video games all day, and lived off the generosity of others. He's not happy that I won't support his chosen lifestyle, but unfortunately not unhappy enough that he and my daughter will split. Nobody else in my family, in-laws, outlaws, or add-ons needs a vehicle, so it's definitely time to sell this beauty. I am the second owner of this truck. I bought it a couple of years ago at an auction. Formerly it had been a meter-setting truck for Southern California Gas Company. I've made a few changes and upgrades since I've owned it, mainly returning it to look like an ordinary pick-up truck and making the interior more comfortable. When I purchased it, it had side tool boxes, no tailgate, meter racks, and a hideously ugly and uncomfortable seat. I stripped the remnants of it's meter-setting history, modified and installed a carpet from a higher-end extended cab model, and installed an extremely comfortable split-bench seat (with lumbar support) that also came out of the extended cab truck. I added the factory Ford privacy-tinted sliding back window. Paint and Body The truck was in great shape when I bought it, except that it had all of the meter-setting equipment from it's prior use. I removed all of that equipment and put on a tailgate to make it look like a regular pick-up, but there are still small holes in the bed and bed rails where tool boxes were mounted, etc. Also, there are body plugs in the roof where antennas and a beacon were mounted. The paint on this truck is amazingly good. I machined buffed it twice during the time I've had it. The paint holds a shine remarkable well. As far as I can tell, the paint is original and it's never been involved in any accident (what looks like over-spray in the photos is actually wax from when I machine-polished the truck). There are two very small dings -- one on the door and one on the bed -- but they're so small I could not capture them in photos. The bottom of the bed, under the bed mat, is scratched and a little beat up from the gas company crew plopping meters in the back. I replaced the front grill with one from a fancier pickup, but the grill is not in perfect condition and the paint is not an exact color match -- if you would rather re-install the ugly argent grill that came with the truck, I've thrown that in the bed of the truck for your use. This is a 13-year-old work truck, so it will have some other quirks and defects that I may not have captured. Interior Again, this is a 13-year-old work truck, so it will have some other quirks and defects that I may not have captured. That stated, the interior on this truck is very nice but not perfect. For example, when I upgraded to a very nice used Ford seat, one of the seams was beginning to separate. I removed that seat fabric and had reinforcing material stitched on the back. The stitching job is not pretty, but should ensure that the seat remains whole for a long time to come. There are no other tears or major scratches on the interior, but it is a 13-year-old work truck. I can't find any cassettes to play, but the AM/FM works really good. If you're desperate for an aftermarket radio with CD player, let me know and I'll pull a Pioneer system from my Chevy truck and throw it in for free (I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade the audio in my Chevy). Mechanical Condition This truck came from the factory with the bigger Flex Fuel 5.4 liter engine, better heavy-duty automatic overdrive transmission, limited slip heavy duty rear end, heavy duty cooling, transmission cooler, heavy duty brakes, etc., that came with the 7700 package. In fact, before Ford released the Super Duty truck, Ford marketed the 7700 truck as its F-250 for a few years. This truck was intended to run on gasoline, ethanol, or compressed natural gas (CNG). It runs great on gasoline. It runs well on E85 ethanol, but sometimes the computer will pick up an oxygen content error on 85% ethanol; to overcome this, I add a little extra gasoline to the pump ethanol and I've had no problems. It's a lot more moody on CNG and the problem has been getting worse. Usually it started fine on CNG, but then would unexpectedly automatically switch to gasoline. Lately, it will not consistently start on CNG. I'm not brave enough to try to fix the CNG myself (although I have all of the manuals), my regular mechanic wont work on CNG, and so-called CNG experts have been flaky about returning my calls. Again, it runs fine on gasoline and ethanol, so I've deferred dealing with the problem. Everything else that I checked works at it should, including lights, horn, signals, steering, windows, etc. The air conditioner blows ice cold air. The battery is not new, but it's an Optima red top -- basically, the best battery on the market that will fit in this truck. Unlike my Chevy hauler and vintage Ford truck, this truck does not mark its territory with any leaks. It steers straight and brakes evenly. Really, it's a very nice truck that I wouldn't sell if I had a justifiable reason for keeping it -- I just have way too many vehicles in my household. Once more, however, this is a 13-year-old work truck so it will have some other quirks and defects that I may not have captured. Maintenance History This truck was fleet maintained for most of its life. Consequently, I'm confident that all maintenance was done according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. I have no records of what was done before I purchased it, but I do have confidence in So Cal Gas' mechanics. When I purchased it, I immediately changed the oil and have done so consistently at approximately 3,000 mile intervals. The oil always looks like dark honey when I change it and I've never had to add oil between changes. I also changed the ATF and all filters when I purchased the truck (including the CNG coalescent filter). At one time about a year ago, the ABS light came on and stayed on. I inspected the brakes, but they all looked good. I took all four wheel assemblies apart and found that one of them had a small sand grain wedged into it. I cleaned the parts and reassembled them and have not had the light stay on since then. However, before I discovered the apparent cause of the problem, I purchased a complete set of rotors, pads, and calipers at a nearby wrecking yard. I will include the spare brake parts IF the vehicle is purchased at the Buy-It-Now price. The 5.4 liter Ford is known for being a great, powerful, and reliable engine but for one significant problem. Like the Ford V-10 engines, the 5.4 liter V-8 engines are known to pop spark plugs. This has happened twice to this truck. I repaired this by installing inserts. When I installed the inserts, I also changed the plug and coil pack for those cylinders ... and I changed a few others. A few of them are hard to reach, so I saved them for later. In other words, I'll throw in a few additional new coil packs and spark plugs and you can change or have them changed when it's needed. Ownership History I bought this truck at an auction. The prior owner was So Cal Gas, a Sempra Energy Company. Extra stuff if you purchase at the Buy-It-Now price NOTE: THIS STUFF WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IF YOU MAKE A BEST OFFER. IN THAT CASE, YOU'RE ONLY BUYING THE TRUCK AS-IS AND I WILL SELL THE OTHER PARTS, ETC., SEPARATELY. If you buy it at my listing price, I will throw in a bunch of valuable extra stuff. This stuff includes an untested remanufactured Compuvalve (these are hard to find -- this week I've seen some on eBay for $600 untested to $2,500 with guaranteed function at delivery only). Also included at the Buy-It-Now price are: 1) one or two additional CNG parts; 2) a very comprehensive set of installation, diagnosis, and repair manuals (shown in the last photo); 3) a complete set of good used rotors, calipers, and brake pads; 4) the wheels and tires described in the note below; and 5) whatever other additional parts I find when I clean out my garage later this afternoon. Again, this stuff comes ONLY with the Buy-It-Now price. About the tires on the truck and in the bed The truck will come with four matched Firestone load range E tires on factory steel 7-lug wheels. All of the included Firestone tires are balanced and evenly worn. The wheels are all due for a repaint. If you buy the truck at the Buy-It-Now price, I'll throw in two additional factory steel 7-lug wheels with Michelin load range E tires. The extra Michelin tires will need to be re-balanced, but, hey, they're Michelin tires with lots of miles left on 'em. Payment $500 deposit must be made by PayPal withing 48 hours of auction close. Balance of payment must be made in used $20 bills. Truck must be paid in full within 7 days of auction close and picked up within 14 calendar days of auction close. If you do not pick up the truck in time I will keep your payment as liquidated damages and will relist the truck and/or donate it to a registered charity. Pick-up only - no delivery This truck is available for pick up only in zip code 90638. I will not deliver this truck. If you're from out of town, we're centrally located between a bunch of different LA-area airports and it should be easy to arrange a shuttle or cab. Nearby public airports include LAX, Long Beach, John Wayne (Orange County), Bob Hope (Burbank), or Ontario airports. If your buddy can fly a private plane, Fullerton airport is closest. I work long hours, sometimes from home and sometimes away. As such, we'll need to coordinate about a pick up day and time. I will need to be home when you come by ... and I will not allow anyone else in my household to show, sell, or release this truck. Truck must be paid in full within 7 days of auction close and picked up within 14 calendar days of auction close. I really want this thing gone before my neighbors complain. Consequently, if you do not pick up the truck in time I will keep your payment as liquidated damages and will relist the truck and/or donate it to a registered charity. Warranty ... and an answer to THAT question Warranty? None. Zip. Nada. This vehicle does not come with any warranty. This is a 13-year-old work truck, so it will have some other quirks and defects that I may not have captured. I'm always amazed that on eBay, people ask if a particular used vehicle is able to make a trip cross country. I'm amazed, because nobody can truly predict that it CAN make the trip ... if a vehicle is in rough shape, then perhaps somebody can predict that such a vehicle CANNOT make a long trip. I would certainly be brave enough to drive this truck from LA to Omaha. But I've driven this truck for a couple of years and have therefore developed confidence in its reliability. With the upgraded interior, it would definitely be a comfortable ride. However, I ain't guaranteeing nothin' and you will need to decide on your own if driving this truck long distance is what you want to do. Questions? This is a 13-year-old work truck, so it will have some other quirks and defects that I may not have captured. If you think of something I missed, I'll do my best answer by email your questions honestly and completely. It's hard for me to show the truck because I live in a gated neighborhood that frowns on visitors (and I cannot drive it on public streets due to the PNO status), but I'm more than happy to post or send an additional photo or two. Adding the following information, following an inquiry I received today:Yes, I can show the truck today if you are available. Please send me an email with your contact information. I can text you with a time and place to meet. I see what you meant by your question about the number of owners. So Cal Gas was acquired by Sempra Energy and Sempra also acquired San Diego Gas & Electric. During their mergers, vehicles and other assets were moved around between the different companies ... but they were still all part of Sempra. When I looked at the title history today, I also noticed the reported accident. It was before my ownership, but the only thing I can tell that might have been replaced was the front bumper. The front bumper has been repainted, but I previously assumed that was because of typical front bumper scratches, etc. None of the rest of truck was ever repainted as far as I can tell. It looks really good. Finally got to cleaning out the garage and found a few additional items today. Let me be clear: the truck does not NEED these parts, but for those of you who are into tinkering these will make the truck that much nicer. Most significantly, I have a tilt steering column that can be easily mounted in this truck. It comes with a wood (mahogany?) steering wheel out of a Lincoln Navigator. I also have adjustable pedals (brake and gas) that can easily be added. I just don't have the time or desire to tinker with this truck, mainly because I changed jobs (and I'm a lot busier at work) and I have a vintage truck that will get all of my free time (I know, what free time?).
