Vehicle Detail
I bought this nice 1972 Squareback from an ebay-er in dry, inland Northern California in 2011 and had it shipped to Ohio. Previous owner said it was a daily driver into the mid 2000s. It is in great shape for a car of this type/age, runs great and would be an excellent basis for a rehab project. It has never been driven on snowy, salty Ohio roads and has none of the underbody frame and floor pan rust that destroyed the old VWs when they were driven in the northeast. Unfortunately for me, the kids are in college and I won't have the time or the money to rehab it for years to come, so it is time for someone else to make this their dream car and enjoy it before it gets any older sitting in my driveway. First, the problems:Passenger door latch does not open from the outside. Probably an easy fix.Dent behind and including driver side door (see photos)Driver side mirror broken (replacement easily available on-line)Cracks and missing plastic behind the inside rear-view mirror (the plastic rotted in the sun). Otherwise the mirror looks and works fine.Dashboard and steering wheel are cracked. New original equipment dashboards are still easily available on line, as are replacement (non-original) wheels.Interior fan smokes when you turn it onSome lights are out, inside and outOdometer and trip odometer has not worked since I got it. Says 92,988 but nobody knows how many actual miles. It has been driven a few hundred miles since 2011.Seat adjustments do not work. Driver's seat recline control is stripped and the seat reclines pretty far back when you sit in it. There is a chunk out of the passenger seat (see photo). Back seat is in good shape and folds down nicely to form a huge trunk (in addition to the trunk in front--the engine is under rear cargo area).A few rusty spots on the upper body and around the gas filler tube. Very little rust underneath where it counts. Some fumes in the car, possible exhaust issueDriver side vent window knob missing.Takes a few tries to start up. Can be a little slow on the highwayand on hills. Don't know whether this is a bug or a feature since this is the only one of these cars I ever drove.I replaced the radio antenna but forgot to fish the new wire in from the old one so the wire is not connected to the radio. Probably an easy fix for someone who knows what he or she is doing. The good part is that everything else works well. Four new tires were installed in 2012 and they only have a few hundred miles on them. The fuel lines were recently replaced by a mechanic that specializes in old Volkswagens. Tuned up and oil changed in 2011. The chrome and hubcaps are all there and in decent shape. Most important for a rehabber, the underbody is in great shape. It is a great car for making new friends, the car draws a lot of smiles and attention whenever we take it out. There are local and national networks of air-cooled VW owners to find parts and, in most places, mechanics that specialize in maintaining these cars, so you will have a lot of support in your rehabbing project. Roof racks for your surf boards and other accessories are easily I reavailable online. I had it out on the interstate this week and it had no trouble getting up to 60 in 30 seconds or so and was ready to go much faster! Deposit is by Paypal with payment in full within three days. Pickup and/or transportation is the buyer's responsibility as is to arrange title transfer, has clear Ohio Title.
