Vehicle Detail

Here is an all electric vehicle that doesn't come up for sale very often. This is a 1981 Ford Fairmont sold by Ford as a glider to Electric Vehicle Associates of Cleveland , Ohio. Electrified, then sold to the Navy for an "on base" trial. There were 43 made and only 3 are known to exist. This vehicle underwent testing by the Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Command. This testing was begun during the (renewable energy friendly) Carter administration and was halted after 3 years by the Regan administration. This car was mothballed for 20 years, on a base in California, hence the low miles. This is a 120 Volt vehicle that utilizes 20, 6 Volt golf cart batteries. This is not a cramped, 2 seat, toy NEV that can only go 25 mph. This is full size station wagon that seats 5 plus cargo and can reach speeds of 65 mph. This car is very clean on the outside with very little rust. There are the normal amount of scratches, dings and dents for a 30+ year old car. The interior needs a little TLC as the upholstery and carpeting are showing to their age. I have used this car for my 14 mile (each way) work commute for the past two years and it has been so much fun. You would not believe the looks you get driving this car. I am selling this vehicle in order to accommodate a couple of younger drivers in my house. Plugs into any household 110 outlet. Charges to 80% in 4 hours, a full charge can take 6 to 10 hours depending on the depletion of the battery pack. I charge up at work and I have a full charge when I go home. The batteries were new in 2011 and gave the vehicle a range of 45+ miles on a single charge. The batteries are beginning to age and the current range is 15+ miles on a single charge. The charger is not technically an onboard charger, but I put it in the cargo area and take it with me. The charger has been repaired and reconditioned in the past year. I do not drive this car in the snowy winter weather due to the rear wheel drive and the need to keep it away from salt. I have recently had the steering cable repaired, The rear battery box rebuilt, had all the battery cables inspected and rewired, put a new fan on the controller, and put in heavy duty rear shocks. There was a German gasoline heater that didn't work. I had that removed and put in a 120 volt core heater. The core heater needs to be hooked up to the battery pack. I have included many pictures to help explain the condition of this very special vehicle. Email with any additional questions.
