Vehicle Detail
I bought this car a few years back to do a resto on it. I will not be able to get to it due to other projects. Dual side mounts looks like one repaint many years ago. There is about 75k miles on the odometer. there is some rust in the trunk pan area and rear lower door area and some small other areas but nothing major. This is a solid car and defines the art deco styling of this era. The model 60S special debut was in 1938 and was limited produced. 1938-1940 were the only years the fender mounted lights and style. In 1941 the whole look was changed. The mice lived in this car for a long time and in the engine compartment. The engine turns over. This car will need a full restoration. The ignition lock and trunk lock will need to be replace due to someone drilling it. Doors and hood open as they should. This is a rare piece of American History due to the fact of who and where this car was sold, This car was sold in Everett Washington to the Boeing Aircraft Company for the newly elected Chairman of Boeing after William Boeing Stepped down. Claire L. Egtvedt is a pioneer in the Boeing company. This car wound up in the Phoenix Arizona area 50 plus years ago according to the guy I purchased if from. I can only assume it was sent that way from Washington to Luke Airbase back in the day. Brief history Clairmont L. Egtvedt joined Boeing as a draftsman and mechanical engineer in 1917 after graduating from the University of Washington School of Engineering. He became company vice president and general manager in 1926 and was company president from Aug. 2, 1933, to Sept. 9, 1939. During that period he also was acting chairman of the board, appointed after William Boeing resigned in 1934. Egtvedt was officially named board chairman in 1939, as Phil Johnson became company president. But when Johnson died suddenly on Sept. 14, 1944, Egtvedt reassumed the duties of chief executive officer until William Alan was appointed president in September 1945. Egtvedt then returned to the chairmanship. Under Egtvedt's direction, the Boeing Airplane Co. began building larger and more complex airplanes including the Clipper, the Stratoliner, the Flying Fortress and the Superfortress. He retired from Boeing April 24, 1966, and lived until 1975. Clairmont L. Egtvedt was born on a farm near Stoughton, Wisconsin and received his primary education in the area. He and his family moved to Seattle in 1911. Upon graduating from the University of Washington, Egtvedt joined the one year old Boeing Company as a mechanical engineer on June 4, 1917. He never worked for another employer and, with almost startling rapidity, he became the boss of this one. One year after joining Boeing Egtvedt was named chief experimental engineer and shortly after that was named chief engineer. It was the close at hand familiarity which put him in the frail aircraft of those days, a pad of paper strapped to his leg, taking notes on airspeed, temperatures, pressures, rate of climb and altitude. He liked to recall those trials and tribulations but never seemed impressed with his own role. He tells of the time he and Eddie Hubbard, a test pilot of substantial Boeing fame, flew the Boeing B-1, Flying Boat. "Undeterred by a supervisor who offered to bet William E. Boeing that the plane would never get off the water, Hubbard and I taxied out past a long row of ships anchored in Lake Union. Hubbard poured on the power and the plane rose sharply into the air and up over the anchored ships. Then the engine stalled and the plane started to dive towards the water. Nose down the engine picked up and we zoomed skyward just over the ships' masts only to have the whole procedure repeat several times. The plane zoomed and dived several times until Hubbard was able to find a clear area and made a hasty landing. We discovered that the fuel pump only delivered fuel when the nose was down, point it up and the fuel flow ceased. A workable pump and a wider elevator was the result of that first test hop." Those were tough, formative years for Boeing but through them all Egtvedt gathered ideas and experience rising to vice president and general manager by 1926. In 1933 he was named president. Egtvedt guided the company toward revolutionary changes with emphasis on large aircraft; the Model 314 flying boats and the Boeing Stratoliner. He was named chairman of the company in 1939 and began devoting his time to developments of the Model 299. He is recognized as the father of the B-17, the world's most famed bomber and often credited with playing a major role in the Allied victory. Colonel Robert Morgan, pilot of the B-17 Memphis Belle, states in his book, "...they perfected a prototype design that would soon help save western civilization ..." Morgan's book, The Man who flew the Memphis Belle, provides more details about the aircraft and its design. In 1944 Egtvedt began a term as both chairman and CEO. He would be on the board of directors until he resigned on April 25, 1966. Own a piece of of History!!!!! vehicle open to Inspection I am a member of Cadillac Lasalle Club. This car does not run or drive ! the engine turns over by hand means it is not locked up frozen up or seized up. It will need to be RESTORED. This means new paint work, chrome, interior and so on. The only way this car can make it across country is on a trailer or shipper. Even if this car was restored to like new condition I still would not drive it across country.
