Vehicle Detail
Unrestored Original Paint 1972 Opel 1900 - Manta This Opel was bought new by its original owner in 1971 at the small K&M Buick/Opel/GM dealer in Millinocket, Maine. Based on condition, the car must have lived in the garage, until 1988 when it's owner decided to trade it in to the same dealer he bought it from. The dealer then decided instead of selling it to showcase the car on the showroom floor. It was maintained over the years and only driven in local parades. I bought the car from the dealer and had it shipped to San Diego where I keep in my garage. It is a fantastic little car that always puts a smile on your face. After purchasing the car, I did everything needed to make the driving experience the best it could be. All fluids have been serviced, new points, valves adjusted, a new fuel pump added, weber carburetor installed (fully functional original Solex carb included with sale along with a few other original parts) I also sourced a N.O.S. muffler and resonator and had them installed. It now starts up cold, drives great, sounds nice, shifts smoothly through all gears, has ample power and comes to a stop nicely. Another thing is the steering on the Manta is amazing, feels like power assist but of course it's manual. The tires are brand new white line Centennials. All electrical works, lights, signals, radio, dome light, except the blower motor. Cosmetically both interior and exterior are in outstanding shape for the age. Dash is perfect, crack and blemish free. Seat upholstery is nice and soft, tear free. Most weather-stripping is still soft and supple. All seat belts are intact, no fading and still have all the date tags still sewn in. Headliner is nice except for one tear near the dome light and a bit of discoloration. Loop carpet is in excellent shape. All the glass is fantastic, crystal clear. Paint is the best color red I've ever seen, out in the sun it shines beautifully. It is 43 years old though and has some flaws as one might expect. Both doors have a couple dings, there is a dent at the driver's rear corner next to the bumper, and a paint blemish on the front header panel. Rust is common along Opels but this one has been spared from extensive rust holes due to being kept inside. The only rust I can see is just between where the front fender and door meet, just surface rust where water sits behind the fender and a spot on lower rear quarter panel. Since I've had the car, it has been garage kept, never seen rain and been cleaned/dusted with a water-less car wash. Overall, the little Manta has such character and is a true survivor car with nothing to hide. It's an amazing time capsule that would be a great edition to anyone's collection.
