Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is the rarest of all R107 Mercedes available. It is a 1983 500SL that was special ordered in Germany for export, then sent over to the then small local AMG shop, and had a Getrag 5 speed MANUAL overdrive transmission installed. Although many other customizations were available from AMG at the time, a manual conversion was all that was done. The vehicle was then imported and federalized to 1983 import standards; the North American bumpers were installed at time of import. The European headlights remained and are crack and haze free to this day. The paint is all original with no touch ups except minor chips here and there. The truck deck lid has some cracks in the paint, but still maintains a shine. The entire paint/clear otherwise is in beautiful condition. The car is rust free and has never been hit or repaired. The original 14 inch rims have been replaced with a later set of 15’s and newer tires. The softtop is in great shape except for a repair for a mouse nibbled hole while car was in storage. It was repaired by a local sail shop and in waterproof and very serviceable. The hardtop in great shape both inside and out. The interior is a time capsule with a Clifford 2 alarm installed (but disconnected) and an Alpine cassette. Both were the best in their day as cost was never a consideration when it came to the care and maintenance of this vehicle. The leather is soft and supple. It is flawless except for a small tear on the driver’s bolster panel. This can be repaired if desired as it is the side panel only. The dash is flawless and everything works as it should, the AC is cool not cold. The chrome is flawless and shines like new. There are no pits or scratches. The car was purchased from the original owner and importer; it was stored and used sparingly through its years, the inspection sticker is from 1990. The odometer shows 55,000 miles, but is currently inoperative as a new drive is waiting to be installed as it was bouncing and the new part was ordered. It is included in sale. The only mechanical issue is it could use a driveshaft carrier bearing ($20.00) and new Quibo (rubber) driveshaft couplers. They are full serviceable now and are being driven daily, but have a slight vibration when the torque comes on in 1st or second gear, nothing after that. The parts are 40.00 each and take less than an hour to put them in. The exhaust system is new and OEM. The car is extremely fast and powerful. It is the ultimate sleeper. The motor has @250HP and runs flawlessly. It has been driven in Boston traffic with no overheating problems and starts with the tap of the key. The tranny shifts flawlessly and the clutch grabs great. It has a Posi rear and can burn the tires off if so desired, though never tried…. This seems to be the 6th or 7th found in North America of maybe 20 built by AMG. In 1983 AMG was a small shop in Germany and AMG’s records were destroyed when Mercedes bought them out, so no records exist, but all research seems to verify these numbers. It is the HOLY GRAIL of R107’s!! This opportunity to own one will probably not happen again as they are locked away in collections throughout the world. The R107 is without a doubt the next big collectable of the Mercedes line. Take the time to google around and verify this for yourself, it is exceptionally rare and desirable. I will assist in international shipping if needed. The vehicle does NOT have a title as Maine does not provide them for a vehicle this old. It will come with a Bill of sale and a previous and current registration. I can get a warranty title from DMV for about 10 bucks , but a current registration is usually OK for most states. This was taken from a benz forum in 2011 "The four known 500sl AMG/Getrag five speed vehicles currently in the US are:1. The Ohio 500SL AMG Black on Creme, owned by a couple that still enjoy it often.2. The Beverly Hills 500SL AMG black on black offered at $40k awhile back.3. New York's 500SL AMG black on black owned by fjs560.4. Southern California's 500SL AMG Black on Tan owned by 48hp.Please post any other known 107 M117 AMG/Getrag five speeds.5. New York 500SL AMG Smoke Grey on Creme "one more in NJ and this one makes 7 in North America.
