Vehicle Detail

Welcome. Up for sale is my 1971 Chevy Chevelle 2 Door Coupe Project Car. I have too many projects, and it is now time to part with several of them. This Chevelle started life as a very rare Oshawa (Canada/import) six cylinder car. Although they made just shy of 400,000 Chevelles in 1971, only 6,660 were six cylinder base Chevelle 2 door coupes. As an import car, this Chevelle is one of only 926 produced, not counting color, trim, equipment etc. It is not an SS or big block car, and therefore not a big money car, but it is still cool to have such a rare Chevelle! This Chevelle would make a perfect drag car or SS 454 clone! My intentions were to keep it all stock and "bare bones" in appearance but put a 454 in it and make it a real sleeper! I have multiple current projects, therefore my offering of this one. Please see my description below for a detailed description of all pros and cons of this Chevelle project...and remember, NO RESERVE, SO BID TO WIN! THANK YOU! GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CAR: As stated earlier, this Chevelle started life as a "plain jane," "bare bones," "granny's grocery getter" special. It came with the 250 cid six cylinder and an automatic transmission (2 Speed Powerglide). It was a column shift, bench seat car with power nothing, no a/c, no radio etc. It didn't even have carpet...rather, it had rubber floormatting in it! The original color was Nevada Silver with a Black interior. This base model had Black Roma cloth seating. OVERVIEW: Again, this Chevelle is a roller. This Chevelle was given to me by a friend who is a retired federal police officer. He bought the Chevelle in the early 1990s (1991, I believe) after it was nicely restored (see picture). As of this year, 2014, it has been off the road for 20 years. THEREFORE, IT WILL NEED A COMPLETE RESTORATION IS BEING SOLD AS-IS, WHERE-IS, AS A PROJECT CAR. The last inspection was in 1994. He parked the Chevelle and let it sit, until he decided to have it restored. He was paying a local mechanic to have it restored and stored, but the man who owned the garage attempted arson twice on the property for the insurance money (hence the paint damage to the Chevelle noted in the pictures). The garage owner also sold the car illegally without the title in the process. My friend, the legal owner, had the car recovered by the PA State Police, but the VIN tag had been removed. Thankfully, the trig tag was left intact. My friend and I worked with the PA State Police to verify the vehicle and get a reissued VIN tag for it (pictured). I have a PA title in hand that is ready to transfer. The title is marked "V" for reissued VIN, but it is not a salvage title. Also, the mileage was marked "in excess of mechanical limits" at one point. The body has 105K on it, which is irrelevant, considering it is now a roller. In fact, the engine was missing when I acquired it. It had a built 350 in it, but the engine was pulled and sold when the car was stolen. The 350 engine was never recovered, nor was my friend's '67 Mustang fastback, which was also left in the care of this dishonest man. These unfortunate events resulted in years of legal proceedings and headaches for my friend. Therefore, my friend's misfortune is a lesson to us all to be wary of leaving our classics in the hands of strangers; it is hard to find trustworthy people nowadays! After all this, this Chevelle deserves yet another lease on life! It is a worthy restoration project. Build it the way you want now and save money, while knowing it was done right. Why pay close to $10K for a base V8 Chevelle that's been thrown together by someone else the way they wanted? Buy this project cheap (barely above scrap and core charge cost/value) and make it yours! BODY & FRAME: The full frame is nice and solid. I have bought cars on eBay before when the seller said the frame was solid and when I got there to pick it up, I could put my hand through the frame because of rot. This is absurd and unethical! I have examined the frame myself and I found NO ROT OR RUST THROUGH. It does have minor surface rust and peeling of the factory undercoating from age, but this is normal and to be expected- the car is over 40 years old! Therefore, the frame is sound. You may decide to sandblast it or recoat it to protect it for the years to come, but it is sound as-is. Although this car has a good frame, this car's body WILL NEED SHEETMETAL REPLACEMENT OR REPAIR for rust in the following areas: Front floor pans (I would suggest putting in a new one piece floor) Trunk floor (not gone fully but rusted out in spots. I would suggest a one piece trunk floor) Quarter skins (original quarters could be saved/patched or replace with partial skins) Front fenders (I'd replace with good originals or reproductions) Hood (usable, but I'd replace while redoing the front clip) Inner Rear Wheelwells (typical rot here. Patch or replace) The bumpers will need replaced or rechromed as they have surface rust. The grille was also stolen before the car was recovered. I do not have a grille for it. Reproductions and originals are readily available. The wheels (American Racing) are aftermarket and have surface rust. I will include a set of older Cragar wheels (pictured) to the winning bidder. I will also include the correct hubcaps for a 1971 Chevelle Malibu to the winning bidder if he/she would like to have them. All glass is intact and not cracked to the best of my knowledge. It may have light sctraching from age and wear. The roof, rockers, inner and outer, body corners & firewall, as well as the door jambs, bottoms, seams etc. all look quite solid. Around the rear window is better than most too, as this car was fortunate enough to not have a vinyl roof. However, there is still some minor rot in the rear window area. As the pictures show, the rear package shelf and surrounding sheetmetal is still solid and finished in the original Nevada Silver paint. OVERALL, A VERY SOLID ORIGINAL BODY/SHELL EXCEPT FOR THE FLOORS. THIS CAR IS A 1971 AND NOW OVER 40 YEARS OLD! The transmission currently in the car is a Turbo 350 automatic. I know nothing about it. It should be a good core at the very least. It may perform well, or it may need rebuilt from sitting twenty years? I do not know. The same goes for the rear axle. It is a ten bolt, but I am not sure of the ratio at this time? The rear gears could've been made more agressive, as the car was built up in the early '90s? Again, I am unsure. The axle could still have the original ratio (3.08 open). The white vinyl bench seat shown is included with the sale, as I bought it for this Chevelle. I went out of state to get it and have over $200 in it, and original bench seats in decent shape are few and far between. It will need recovered in black vinyl, and you'll be set. The original dash pad and assorted gauges, controls, vents etc. are mostly unmolested and in considerably nice condition for their age (see pictures). As the pictures show, I began taking off the front clip. The original plastic front inner wheelwells, passenger's side fender and the headlight extensions pictured, all go to the winning bidder. The driver's side headlight extension and fender were damaged when the car was unloaded to my home; however, I bought the needed headlight extension (an original part) on eBay last year at an expense of $125. I scrapped the fender since it was rusty anyhow and not worth fixing. YOU ARE BIDDING ON THE CAR PICTURED AND DESCRIBED- A 1971 CHEVELLE PROJECT. THE OTHER VEHICLES AND PARTS IN THE BACKGROUND ARE NOT INCLUDED. I AM ALSO SELLING MY ALL-ORIGINAL, RUST-FREE 1984 CAMARO Z28 WITH 87K ORIGINAL MILES AND MY VERY RARE EXPRESSO BROWN 1969 GTO SURVIVIOR WITH 169K ORIGINAL MILES, ORIGINAL WINDOW STICKER AND BUILDSHEET AS WELL, SO PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER LISTINGS AND/OR EMAIL ME FOR DETAILS.
