Vehicle Detail
1991 BMW K1 Amazing Original 20,300 Mile Example - Super Rare Classic Black Metallic Sitting Since 2006 - Completely Gone Through Last Month - LOTS of New Bits & Work Well Accessorized, Absolutely Ready To Ride - An Alluring Neo Classic BMW Art Bike Sold new in New Jersey, this 1991 BMW K1 was carefully and sparingly used for the first fifteen years of its life before going into a friend's collection on display for the last eight. Late last year, we purchased a handful of cars and motorcycles from this collection, all of which required some moderate sorting-out. Since this was not the usual Catsup and Mustard or Electric Blue and Silliness example, we thought it was definitely worth the trouble and expense to make this a good one once again. The Classic Black Metallic actually has not only some charcoal gray but a dark jade hue to it in certain lights, you will see some of this below, it is a really neat color! On receipt of the bike, we removed the fuel tank and replaced the pump and the pickup including the gauge sender with Genuine BMW parts since the original parts were too far gone. The inside of the tank was surprisingly better and required no repairs or a lining once the dead fuel was cleaned out. All fluids were changed and flushed - brakes, coolant, engine, transmission and rear drive oils changed. Additionally, receipts with the bike showed that the rear master cylinder was replaced as well as the rear pinion seal and a spline lube when the bike was put up so we did not concern ourselves with this. (In addition to the receipts, the original owners manual and two original folding keys as well as one straight key are included.) You will note in the above photo that there is a small ding in the tank just behind the roundel. We did not even notice this until it was back on the bike. It would be tricky to fix without risking breaking the original paint... not sure how it happened but we felt it was better left alone. We also found that both forks were leaking badly and the WORKS performance rear monoshock was leaking too - we removed the forks and resealed them and replaced the WORKS shock with a brand new Hagon adjustable with the correct K1 spring and damper. I found long ago that Spectro 10W is the "bees knees" in a K100 or a K1, so we used that for the fill. The bike rides fantastically as a result. Clearly, the tires on the bike as-found were past their prime, so we put two new Metzler Roadtec Z6es on front and back, just like a new BMW would have. The Staintune exhaust appears to have been with the bike a long while. It has some light scratches and discoloration commensurate with the mileage but no dents or dings. The left rear pillion peg is down in these photos and I don't know why I didn't put it up, but it stays up just fine by itself. Incidentally, I replaced a worn rider's pillion rubber and one of the return springs on the opposite side. The K1 is indeed a "two-up" bike, just remove the rear cowl and ride away, there's even a grab handle under there for the passenger. The bike has a lovely Sargent seat as you can see here, Sargent make the finest sport saddles in my opinion. Alluring from any angle. Yes, the ABS works perfectly and has been thoroughly flushed as mentioned above. Unlike the standard RS, the K1 has no provision for luggage - the two compartments on either side of the rear bodywork and one in the right front fairing have to suffice. You may notice that the bars sit a little higher than normal, and they do... These risers not only raise the bar height but give a very nice set back for a more upright riding position. I don't know who made them but I really like 'em. Barely warmed up here and idling smoothly... note both original folding keys. The fairings are lovely, appear to have original paint and decals on both sides, above and below... We did have to make some repairs to the front fender, which is to be expected after so many years. There are a few small hairline cracks which have all been shored up underneath. The K1s were famous (infamous?) for cracked plastic. Note above the emergence of the green hue with the flash! Close-up of the VIN on the frame tube is WB1053504M6365535, which matches the title in our possession. payment/shipping While physically located in Virginia, the above BMW motorcycle is being sold by a licensed motor vehicle dealer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This dealer handles much of the paperwork on our myriad car purchases (and the occasional motorcycle). It matters little to me who gets paid (the dealer or myself) so long as full payment is received by one of us within seven days of auction close as I will designate to you at close of auction. There will be no exceptions to this unless cleared with me in advance of your bid. The dealer will assess no additional fees for this paperwork and the title will be made out to you and sent to either me (to go with the bike at pickup) or directly to you if pickup has already been made or the bike is being transported professionally - or however you designate, whatever makes you the most comfortable. Obviously, neither the title or the bike will not be released before payment is received in full. I will be happy to recommend a qualified motorcycle shipper to you during or after the close of auction as there are a few different ones I use. Not everyone is qualified to handle a bike this special/delicate and I hope that if you are not picking it up in person that you will take my advice as to who to use. I would hope that shipment occurs within fourteen days of auction close unless arranged with me in advance of your bid.QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? CONCERNS? E-MAIL ME OR CALL 804-357-4926
