Vehicle Detail

Description: This car will sell to the highest bidder, regardless of price. Period. I want it gone ASAP, so I'll even refund $50 via PayPal if you pick it up by 8:00 PM on the day the listing closes. Please read this description carefully. I know my cars and I'm painfully honest, but if I've left something out I'll do my best to answer questions. This is a nice little bug, but it's not the right car for our driver and that's why I'm selling it. I'm selling it as-is because we don't want to fix a car that's not the right car for us. I'll explain, but please bear with me. One of my kids is going to a private college-prep high school, where she's known a young lady who's been a foreign exchange student there for 2.5 years. The family that was hosting the young lady is losing their house, so we invited her to come live with us beginning during the Christmas break. To allow her to be a bit more independent (she recently turned 18), her parents sent her money to buy herself an economical car. Unfortunately, she did not ask me for help or advice and instead relied on the former host family's mom to bring her to the first cute car she found online. The sleazy dealer saw her coming, took her money, and sold her a car that needed some obvious minor repairs. I'll get to those in a little bit, but I want to brag about what's right with the car first. The car has remarkably low miles for a car that's about fourteen years old. I'm a car guy and I truly believe it has a lot of life left in it. The engine and transmission run and shift smoothly. The brakes will stop on a dime. I haven't taken the wheels off, but peeking through the holes the rotors are clean and the pads appear to be relatively new. The tires are old and worn, but they're worn evenly, suggesting that they've been rotated on time and there are no alignment or suspension concerns. The windows and locks work properly with no hesitation, but you do have to tug on the driver's exterior door handle a little harder than I'd like. No problem, but just want to disclose what I know. It has a nice upgraded Pioneer sound system. The right front speaker has an occasional minor buzz, but it didn't bother my kids. It annoys me a little, but I prefer to crank up the rear speakers anyway. Again, no big deal but I don't want to keep any secrets. The seats seem to have been re-done recently and the car appears to have a brand-new front windshield that was professionally installed. There are no serious defects remaining to the interior, but the door panels do look a bit droopy. The exterior is in great shape, except the front bumper has obviously gently kissed a few things over it's lifetime and it's been repaired ... but no other body damage or repairs that I could detect. The clearcoat on the roof is faded and flaking, but the rest of the black paint holds a nice shine. The car has no rust. All other lights, gauges, and locks seem to work. The power mirrors work most of the time, but the driver's side mirror can be a little moody (only an issue if multiple drivers are regularly using the car). I was unable to test the cruise control because I didn't think about it before the radiator went out and now cannot test it. The AC and heater both work great. Okay, now more details on the bad news. Our young student was driving along happily a couple of weeks ago, drove through a small dip, and out came the radiator. Not just a leak, but a broken bracket allowed the radiator to drop a few inches, causing the bottom hose connection to snap off. Consequently, it will need a new radiator and either a new or used bracket. I've priced the radiator at about $125 to $200 depending on quality, but I've made no effort to price the bracket. I had AAA tow the car to my mechanic and had him look over the car carefully. In addition to the bad radiator bracket, somebody also bypassed the thermostatic controls that turn on the electric cooling fans. Now the fans apparently run whenever the engine is turned on. Not a big deal here in sunny SoCal, but not something you'd want to leave in place if you're driving in colder climates. Additionally, my mechanic found that the boot over one of the constant velocity joints is ripped. The CV joint does not make any noise and if I were to drive it myself, I'd simply install a new slip-on CV joint cover. However, considering that this would be my girls' car, I'd feel better about replacing the CV joint already. After the radiator blew out, I also noticed that the ABS light occasionally glows a little -- it doesn't come on completely, it just glows sometimes and turns off sometimes. I did not notice this before I had it towed to my mechanic, so I did not have him take a look at the ABS codes. However, I did have him scan the OBDII system and there are no current or pending DTCs. Since the radiator blew out, the only times the car has been moved has been via tow truck and trailer. That's also how you'll need to bring it home -- on a tow truck or trailer! This car runs and drives well, but you'd be nuts to try to drive it home 'cuz you'll ruin the engine. It also needs a new spare tire, but the rim, jack, etc., are there. The car was missing rear seat headrests when my student bought it, but I located a pair of black ones that will come with the car. The remaining fixes it needs seem relatively straightforward but I don't have the time to do them myself (I have too many other incomplete projects) and because of the car's age I don't want to pay my mechanic to do it. If you're handy or you have a mechanic whose hourly rate is cheaper than mine, this could be a great deal for a low mileage car. Or flip the car and make a few bucks. The car has a clean title. The pink slip was issued in November 2013, when my student bought the car. The registration was subsequently updated to my address and the new tags are valid through January 2015 in California. Because I cannot drive this car without risking damage from overheating it, I cannot have it smog inspected and you are buying it as-is. It should not have trouble passing smog inspection (it passed for the November 2013 purchase), but you're on your own with this. If you want to fix it or scrap it, that's up to you, but you're on your own. Other than what I've described above, I know nothing about the history of this car. I am, however, confident that it was a well-loved bug for most of its life. I suggest that you check the free title history if that's something that's important to you. Please take a look at my other items. Many of my items will start at a penny or a buck and most have no reserve. I'm listing things as fast as I can, but this is a hobby for me, so I list only as time allows and only when I know I'll be able to ship immediately after the auction closes. If you have questions, please ask and wait for an answer BEFORE you bid. I'll do my best to answer questions. If I don't know or if I decide it's too much effort to find out the answer, I'll be honest and tell you. I buy a fair amount of stuff on eBay from time to time and I really appreciate honesty. If you check my feedback, you'll see that my buyers agree. I'm not likely to be available for an in-person inspection and you can't just drive up to my house 'cuz we live in a gated community. Consequently, you'll want to look very carefully at the photos. If there's something in particular that you want photographed, let me know and I'll do my best to take and send photos. Payment and Pick Up: Deposit of $500 via PayPal is due within 48 hours of auction close. Balance is due via PayPal or cash (used $20 bills only) before pick up. Absolutely no checks of any kind, money orders, traveler's checks, credit cards, or Chuck E Cheese tokens. If it sells for less than $500, then the full amount is due via PayPal within 48 hours of auction close. This car must be picked up within seven days of auction close or you will forfeit your deposit as liquidated damages and I will donate the car, sell it to a second-chance buyer, or junk it at my discretion. It is critically important for me to get rid of this thing ASAP, as I live in a gated neighborhood with an aggressive homeowners' association. If you pick it up by 8:00 PM on the same day the auction closes, I'll refund $50 of your PayPal deposit when I see the tail lights of your tow truck heading down my street. No Shipping: Absolutely no shipping. Let me be very clear: you need to come to my house with a tow truck or trailer, you're responsible for loading it, and no you cannot drive it home. I will also not assist a carrier in picking up the car, other than to hand over the key and paperwork at my house. On Jan-13-14 at 20:34:04 PST, seller added the following information: Additional information: I moved the car this evening (street sweeper is coming tomorrow morning) and I noticed the following:There is a small crack in the dashboard, near the passenger side airbag. You cannot see it easily from the driver's seat, but you can probably notice it from the passenger seat. This is a crack in the hard plastic, not in the padded dash. I tried to take a photo but it doesn't show up.The passenger side running board has a pretty good side "oops" on the bottom. You can see this in the photos of the passenger side if you look carefully. Also, I want to remind you that this is a fourteen year old car -- it has it's share of blemishes, but the worst of it to me is the deteriorated clearcoat on the roof. Lastly, if you contact me about the car via email (my preferred method), please do not leave your contact information in the text of the email. I generally like to post inquires onto eBay so that other potential buyers can see the questions, but I cannot guarantee that other buyers won't contact you if you put your contact information in the text. Thanks ... and happy bidding! I hope this car can make somebody else happy! On Jan-17-14 at 08:01:38 PST, seller added the following information: I've had several inquiries about viewing the car and/or listening to it run. I'm restricted on how many visitors I can have in my neighborhood, so I cannot just show the car at my house. However, what I can do is park it on a neighboring street, outside our community's gates, so that potential buyers can drive by and take a look. Then, if you're interested, one of us can drive by (we live 1-2 minutes around the corner) and open it up for you. You can hear the engine run only very briefly, because I don't want it to heat up, but you will NOT be able to drive it. I'll plan on moving it outside my gates by late morning on Saturday, then I'll tow it back to my house mid Saturday afternoon. Although the auction closes Sunday, I will not be able to show it after Saturday afternoon. I'll need to coordinate schedules with others at home, but I'll post the viewing hours by early Saturday morning. I hope this helps. On Jan-18-14 at 09:39:42 PST, seller added the following information: I've parked this cute little bug outside the fence of my gated neighborhood for part of Saturday morning and afternoon only. The auction closes on Sunday morning, so if you're interested in buying it, please come take a look at it today before you bid. If you cannot come or you choose not to, you're doing so at your own risk ... so please keep that in mind as you bid ... or not. The car is located just across the street from the Arco AM/PM at the corner of Beach Boulevard and Hillsborough Drive in La Mirada. I added a couple of photos so that you can see the neighborhood where it's parked. If you come look at it today, my phone numbers is on the dash ... you can call or text me (I'm a little hard of hearing, so I prefer text ... but I should be okay by phone if you speak clearly) and I should be able to make it there in two minutes if I'm home ... five to ten minutes if I'm at the Lowes just down the street. I'm towing the car back to my house at around 2:30 this afternoon, so please plan accordingly.
