1. There has never been an owner of a Toyota hybrid that has paid to replace a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid/traction battery. Period. Anything else is a myth. And that is in the nine, almost ten, years the Prius has been in the US. 2. The current record I know of is over 360,000 miles on a Prius with the original NiMH and hybrid system. 3. It is also a myth that the Prius costs more to maintain. The Prius actually costs a little less than .11 cents a mile to maintain for each 100,000 miles. That .11 cents includes gas at $3.50 a gallon, tires, oil changes and all other regularly scheduled maintenance at a Toyota dealership, not a cheapy lube. The Prius actually has less to maintain and replace than a standard vehicle. 4. The Prius has no starter, no alternator, no mechanical steering pump, no steering belt, and the brake pads should never need to be replaced due to the regenerative braking system. Also, the electrical portion of the hybrid system is self- adjusting and self-regulating, you do no maintenance on it. Once again, anything else said is a myth. Of course, you still need to do oil changes and air filter changes on the internal combustion engine (ICE). Let's look at some basics for this Prius and any used vehicle: 1. Who owned the vehicle before and will that person allow you to drive it beforehand and show you the service records?? 2. Are there maintenance records for that vehicle and do they show a strong, consistent history of at least the basics of: - oil changes every 3000 to 5000 miles - tire rotations every other oil change - 15,000 mile services at the dealership
