Vehicle Detail
ulster474 store This auction is for a very original 1966 Ford Thunderbird. The car is in very nice condition, but there is a problem with the motor, I will get to that in a little bit. The car is Maroon Metalic with a black vinyl interior. It has it's original 390ci motor and C6 automatic transmission. This is a one family owned, garage kept car since new. I purchased it from the family last spring. It has 98,000 original miles. There is no rust on the body, the floor pans, trunk floor and frame are solid. Beautiful interior. When I bought the car the engine was running rough. I attributed it to old gasoline as they told me the car had been off the road for a year. I drove the car 100 miles home and it handled beautifully. No play in the steering, great suspension. I took my hands off the steering wheel for 10-15 seconds at 65 mph and the car tracked straight as an arrow. I drained the gas tank, expecting the motor to run perfectly afterwards, but it did not. It was still running rough. Two days later the engine started smoking heavily from the tailpipes and would no longer start without spraying starter fluid into the carb. It's now difficult to keep the engine running without keeping your foot on the gas. Runs rough and stalls. I suspect that the rings and valves were sticking due to lack of use. Service records show that they only put 300 miles on the car in the last 10 years. I'm not a mechanic, but I suspect it now has a broken piston ring. The car has nice glass all around, soft supple weather striping, including window felts and beautiful chrome around the windows and doors. The doors close perfectly. Good tires all around. All original trunk lining in nice condition and original bumper jack. All lights working, gauge lights, headlights, taillights, flashers. The motor has to be running at a consistent idle for the sequentials to work properly, but they worked perfectly on the drive home as my friend who was following me can attest to. Working AM radio. Very solid and correct dual exhaust system with the proper secondary mufflers at the tailpipes. The gas gauge is the only gauge that's not working. It looks like the car was repainted about 20 years ago. The paint is not perfect, but very presentable. There is some paint loss on the lower rear valance, as well as a spot on the passenger side front fender. And there are some small white specs that appear to be on top of the paint on the trunk and by the rear roof pillars (all of this is shown in close up photos). Interior door panels are very nice, no cracks in the dash pad. I removed the 2 layer thick floor matts to reveal the never stepped on carpet. The drivers seat has a small tear in the backrest and a split seam on the seat bottom and there are a few dime size holes in the headliner. Original owners manual, service records and shop manual included. If you look closely at the 39 photos I've included in this auction, you'll see this is a very straight and solid, unmolested original car. If you do a motor swap you'll be driving the car the next day. If you plan to use a transport company to retrieve the car for you, this is considered a non running vehicle by them and is much more costly to ship then a turn key driver. Please check your costs prior to bidding. If you plan to pick up the vehicle on your own, you may need a winch or a come-a-long to load it on your trailer. You may be able to drive it on, but it's tricky with the car stalling under load. Please e-mail me with any questions you may have. I don't have a "Buy It Now" price and would like to let the auction run it's course. This is a "No Reserve" auction, so the highest bidder will own the car. Winning bidder is responsible for transport. Full payment is due within 5 days of end of auction. If you would like to see the car in person, just contact me and I'll be happy to show you the car.
