Honda’s corporate motto, “Performance First,” says a lot about the changes that Big Red made to the Rancher AT. Using the components from several existing Honda models, the machine is part Rincon (styling), part Rubicon (transmission) and partly its own (engine). Honda chose to augment its lineup with the Rancher AT rather than replace the existing Rancher with the 329cc engine. The 2004 Rancher AT fills out the line with a true 400-class engine. Honda reached the new engine displacement by increasing the cylinder bore to 85mm and the stroke to 70mm. The changes result in a displacement of 397cc, which according to Honda, creates 20 percent more torque and 10 percent more horsepower than the original Rancher. Its power is noticeable from the seat; the machine is more capable and fun to ride because of it. In the Hungry Valley SVRA, where Honda introduced the quad, there are plenty of hills to climb; the new powerplant crawled its way up challenging obstacles. The upgraded transmission features the same automatic or Electronic Shift Program system as the Rubicon. There is also a thumb switch for choosing between two- and four-wheel drive. In Auto, the hydrostatic transmission changes gears based on a number of engine factors, including rpm, throttle position, vehicle speed and more. In ESP, the tranny chooses between five pre-programmed locations that mimic gears. Experienced riders or riders who are used to shifting manually may prefer the power delivery in ESP more than in auto. The power was often lacking in auto in some situations; when climbing, this was the case. When riding the same hills in ESP though, I could click to the desired gear, and have plenty of useful power. With the ECU programmed to provide actual engine braking, descending hills is not a problem. On steep hills, riders may need a bit of brake to help, but on typical downhills, the engine braking alone is enough. On the trails and in the sand washes that make up much of the Hungry Valley Recreation Area, the machine excels. It’s stable at speed and when moving slowly over obstacles. The suspension handles bumps well. The Rancher AT pops over small ravines or rocks and lands on all fours with minimal rider input, which inspires confidence. Shifting with ESP is smooth and seamless when the throttle is released between shifts. In auto, the shifting is precise. In two-wheel drive, breaking the back end loose out of corners requires a healthy dose of rider input, but the machine is sporty enough to do it. In four-wheel drive, good luck. All four tires bite the earth with vigor. Switching between two- and four-wheel drive is on-the-fly, so quick changes are possible when needed. Sitting Pretty Ergonomically, the redesigned machine is nice and comfortable. As a tall rider, I had plenty of space on the floorboards, in the seat and at the handlebars. Styling is definitely borrowed from the Rincon, with sharp lines and a sporty look and feel. But while it looks similar, there is definitely a compact feel to the machine while riding. Not crowded, mind you, just not spread out as much as the big 650. Integrated headlights and taillights add to the sleek appearance. Color options are similar to other Honda models: red, yellow or olive green. Rack capacity stays the same: 66 pounds up front and 133 pounds in the rear. Part of the machine’s appeal is its ability to perform equally well in work and recreational applications. It’s well suited for a day on the trail, or a day hauling a utility trailer around a ranch. An all-new ATV with Honda's revolutionary Hondamatic transmission, the FourTrax Rancher AT stands out as the most innovative, technology packed ATV in the 400cc class. And with Traxlok, the choice of two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive is as easy as flipping a switch with your thumb.MANUFACTURER Honda MODEL YEAR 2004 MODEL FourTrax® Rancher® AT TRX400FA M.S.R.P. * $NO RESERVE DIMENSIONS LENGTH 80.0 in.
