Vehicle Detail
1970 Mustang Mach 1 428 SCJ, 4 Speed, Calypso Coral !!!! Here before you is probably one of the most desirable combination of factory options, color and drivetrain that could have been ordered in a 1970 Mach 1. There were less than 500 R-code SCJ 4 speed Mach 1s built in 1970 (that is fewer than the Boss 429). When you add that this car came from the factory wearing Calypso Coral and was ordered with a long list of the most popular options of today and you have what I consider the ultimate 1970 Mach 1. Now, take that desirability with the rarity of its drivetrain and then add to it that this car was born in San Jose and lived in the LA area most of its life, only accumulated 66,400 original miles and I don't think you could argue that this is a special machine! Take a look at the pictures, study the Marti Report and read my description. The car speaks for itself. History: There are many documents with the car that show the history back to 1985 in the LA area. It also has a Marti report that shows all this car's long list of desirable options. It had just shy of 60,000 miles then and has only traveled 6400 miles since. It still has with it the personalized plates (COBRA JT) that were on the car in 1985 as well as the original license plate frame from Friendly Ford in Fresno, where the car sold new. I hate to call this car a "survivor" because I think that term gets over used and under appreciated. But, this car has not ever been completely disassembled and restored, but has rather been selectively restored and maintained as needed. Much of the hidden areas of the car are just as it left the assembly line and are untouched. It still has the original paint in the trunk and inside all of the panels. All the panels are original to the car. The car was featured in Mustang Illustrated magazine in May1996 and has also recently been featured in a series of TV commercials for Haggerty Classic Car Insurance. Here is a link to one of the many Hagerty commercials that feature the car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKCTYY3jGA4 Body: The paint is nearly flawless, I would say a 9 out of 10. There are a few small chips and touch ups. A professional touch up and buff could make it a 10 pretty easily. The hood and rear spoiler have the correct textured black paint. The car has won a trophy at nearly every show I have taken it to. The highest honor was a top 10 recognition at the 2011 Mid America Ford and Shelby meet cruise!!! The car is 99.9% rust free and still has all of its original body panels. The original Calypso Coral can be found inside the doors, front fenders, trunk etc. . There is a very small patch behind the passenger rear wheel, that is the only evidence of rust repair on the entire car. Overall the car is just beautiful and the paint just glows, the car looks "plugged in". Interior: The interior is nearly perfect and is a combination of new and original parts. The front seats appear to be recovered since they should have had a grey stripe in them. They are, however, correct comfortweave material and perfect fit of the covers. The rear seat and headliner appear to be original. The carpet has been replaced. I recently replaced the door panels. The dash appears to be all original. All of the gauges work perfectly, including the tach. The Rimblow steering wheel has been restored and a previous owner added tilt wheel to the car. About the only thing that could use improvement is to replate the chrome on the gauge bezel. Trim: The chrome is all prefect. It appears that all of the trim was replaced with NOS pieces at the time of the paint job in the early 90s. I personally installed NOS reverse lights, hood hinges and bumper guards. I repainted the Mach 1 rocker moldings in the correct Dark Argent, and the car still has the very rarely seen plastic pieces in the door jamb at the rocker molding. The wheels are original 15x7 Ford Magnums dated from the early 70s. It has original Ford exhaust tips that are perfect. Undercarriage:The chassis has had some detailing of the springs, rear axle, transmission etc. The floors and framerails are mostly original and unrestored. The transmission is the original unit and wears the cars VIN and the RUG-AZ tag. The speedometer reducer is present and functional. The correct N Case 9" 31-spline 3.91 gear axle is present with no noise and a functioning Traction-Loc unit. The brakes work flawlessly. The car sits square and has just a bit of rake, mostly from having 235/60R15 front tires and 255/60R15 rear tires. The power steering functions like new and has a combination of NOS and original hoses. The car has a brand new steel flywheel and Centerforce clutch (original flywheel included). The car even has the extremely hard to find reverse lockout rod. The exhaust has Magnaflow mufflers that sound awesome! with no drone. Engine: In case you are wondering if this cars runs, or how the exhaust sounds, here is a video of the car in action!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8vKrduSakw The engine was recently freshened and runs better than new. It has a mild cam with .560 lift and just a little bit of a rough idle, just enough to make it sound tough. The car is also currently set up with FPA ceramic coated headers and a Holley 750 double pumper. It runs extremely well, fast, doesn't over heat even in Texas summer temperatures. Included with the sale are the parts that I took off of the car. The complete functioning smog system, exhaust manifolds, heat shield, S-tube, and restored date coded 1970 4 speed Carburetor. The correct date coded 4 speed distributor with X6 dual diaphragm was recently restored, recurved and replated and runs fantastic. It has the correct 4441s fuel pump, DOTA-C fan, fan shroud, and power steering cooler. The correct '70 shaker base with snorkel is on the car. All of the correct SCJ equipment is present. The correct crank, rods, counterweight, oil cooler, speedo reducer, etc. are all on the car. All of the California Evaporative Emissions components are on the car, including the original tank that has been restored. Heck, even the rev limiter is on the inner fender!! The block, heads and intake are not date code correct, they are the only parts that are not date code correct. Please call me with any questions you might have. Thanks, Todd 512-791-2173
