Vehicle Detail
1991 Volkswagen Jetta GL HISTORY: When I was in high school and college, I drove a similar 1991 Jetta 5-speed and have very fond memories of that car. It was fun to drive, good on gas and never broke. In short, the best car I ever owned. So recently, I set out to find another, but they all seemed to be very rusty, until February of 2011, when I found and purchased this one. It was rust free and had low mileage but it was an automatic. I bought it anyway. I was raised in my father’s VW repair shop, so the thought of converting this car from automatic to manual didn’t scare me a bit. And that’s exactly what I did. I’ve put 20,000 trouble-free miles on it since the conversion and I average 33MPG per tank of gas. CONDITION REPORT Mechanical: As mentioned above, I converted the car from an automatic to a manual transmission. While it was apart, the car received the following new parts and upgrades: - new clutch - (2) new axles - (2) new ball joints - rebuilt shifter linkage (shifts like a new one now) - new power steering rack with new (inner &outer) tie rod assemblies - dual-downpipe GTi exhaust manifold (improved throttle response, horsepower & MPG) - New A/C compressor & r134a conversion (air blows ice cold now) - New head gasket, timing belt &radiator’ - New heater core (the dash had to come out anyway for the manual transmission conversion & they are problematic in these cars). The heater works great, too now Body & Interior: I never drove the car in the salt or snow; it’s still nearly as rust-free as when I bought it. Sides are laser-beam straight except for a very small ding in the left front fender, behind the emblem (see photos) - Paint is all original and shines nicely, although the hood is a little faded if you look closely. - There are three rust bubbles (see photos): one at the bottom of the windshield, one on the rear panel next to the “VW” emblem, and one on the bottom of the rear door. There is no rot and there are no holes. - Floors & rocker panels are original, rust-free & rock solid (see photos) - Interior is all original, immaculate & never smoked in - Headliner is beginning to fall by the rear window (see photos) - Newer Blaupunkt AM/FM CD player - Factory six-speaker stereo option Overall, this is a very good car in much better condition than most 22 year old Volkswagens. Although it isn't perfect, it is very good car that presents nicely and is a car you would be proud to own. I would not hesitate to drive this car to Alaska and back! No stories, just fly in & drive home. It’s a really good one, owned & loved by an adult mechanic, and I’ll truly be sad to see it go!! PRE-BIDDING INSPECTIONS ARE WELCOMED & ENCOURAGED.
