Vehicle Detail
1983 Honda CX650T Turbo This bike is one of the rarest pieces of Honda history and one of the most fascinating bikes ever built, by Honda or any other motorcycle manufacturer. This is your opportunity to own one of Honda's best! A bit on the history of the Honda Turbo's Honda's entrance into Turbocharged and EFI motorcycles came in 1982 with the CX500T Turbo. Honda shocked and stunned the motorcycle world with the introduction of this amazing motorcycle. This was the world's first turbocharged production motorcycle, featuring fuel injection and the most radical fairing yet seen on a motorcycle. The CX500T powerplant was based on Honda's water-cooled V-twin with four pushrod-operated over-head valves per cyclinder used in the shaft-drive CX500 which was intoduced a few years earlier. Accounts hold that Honda designed this unique Transverse V-twin with the intent of turbocharging the powerplant in the future. In 1983, as turbocharging was the wave of the future, Honda bumped the displacement to 674cc, although all CX models were called 650's and made numerous revisions to the Turbo. Cosmetically the colors were changed to the Red,White and Blue theme which Honda stuck with for many years during the 80's. The ergonomics of the ride were improved with taller bars and a higher 'visor' on the fairing. Mirrors were changed as well to go with the new, upright riding position. Honda made many changes to the powerplant, aside from the increase in displacement. Most notably, Honda simplified the EFI system, removing several sensors and system redundancy and added a manual 'choke' which was in essence an idle stepper for cold warm-ups. The compression ratio was increased from 7.2:1 to 7.8:1 and boost was reduced slightly. The CX650T's valves are larger in diameter than the 500's: 32mm intake and 28mm exhaust compared to the 500's 31mm and 24mm. As before, the CX uses four-valve heads and pushrod-actuated valves, but the 650's intake valves have greater lift than the 500's, and the 650 intake ports and injector bores are further enlarged. Airbox volume is also up. To feed the larger engine, Honda enlarged the IHI turbocharger: the 650's compressor wheel is 51mm in diameter, up three millimeters from the 500's, while the exhaust turbine remains 50mm in diameter. The 650's waste gate begins to open at 16.4 psi of boost, down one psi from the 500. These changes, along with gear ratio changes, helped with the plauged 500's turbo-lag, and broadened and smoothed the power delivery making the 650 much more pleasurable to ride. Claimed horsepower was around 97 at 8,000rpm. Other various refinements improved the 650 over the 500 and made it an absolute joy to ride. Accounts vary, but reportedly 1777 were built with approximately 1100 coming to the US market. Most of those never made it to the dealer showroom for retail sale. Again, numbers vary, but around 800 units were distributed to various Vocational and Career Tech Centers for schooling purposes. At this time in the motorcycle industry Honda was exceedingly concerned about the future and availablity of educated motorcycle technicians, and, as an enticement to get young high school students into the motorcycle field Honda donated thousands of motorcycles to these tech centers. Honda donated CBX1100's, CB750's, CB450's and CX650 Turbos to these tech schools for students to learn about the evolving motorcycle industry in a 'hands-on' enviroment. After 1983, market factors influenced Honda to drop the Turbo from their line-up. This motorcycle is in outstanding condition and only has 524 original miles on it. It is all original and in excellent condition. It is an excellent example of an original, unrestored CX650T. Not quite a 10, but very close and could be made a 10 very easily. It currently has Continental tires on it, a Conti-Go 100/90-18 front and a Conti-Go 130/90-17 rear. These tires were installed in 2009 to allow the motorcycle to be ridden safely on a 250 mile Vintage bike trip. This is the last time the bike was ridden. The original tires are included with the bike in this auction for the discriminating buyer that wants full authenticity and originality. This bike starts, runs and drives as new. There is no rust in the tank, fork seals are good, brakes are good. It could, literally, be ridden home by the lucky bidder. As you can see in the pictures the bike is in excellent condition with a few minor scuffs from storage. The bike has not been crashed or laid down. The right mirror 'swivel socket' is tweaked from being tipped into a wall. There is one minor crack in the fairing on the right side as well (pictured). This bike will have a new Yuasa battery installed prior to delivery. For any questions, details, additional pictures, feel free to call us 1-888-272-183.
