Vehicle Detail
Some lucky person will be the second owner of this wonderful car. When BMW introduced the new 740 series for 1995, quite simply, my wife fell in love with it, and had to have one. It took nearly a year for her to let go of her previous vehicle, a 1987 Merkur XR4Ti, but that is another story for another day. When it finally came down to purchasing a new 740, it was late in '95 and BMW was no longer taking orders for new '95's, so we searched the country for this specific color and option pairing. In fact, one of the reasons we did not order a '96 was because for 96 BMW only built 740iL's, which merely offers a few more inches of rear legroom, not necessary to us, which also upped the price about 6 grand. So we finally found this car in Chicago, primarily because we HAD to have the winter package (heated seats, heated headlight washers and the ski bag for extended items through the trunk into the rear seat area), along with the premium sound package, traction control, etc. To be clear though, this car has NEVER been exposed to winter weather, salted roads, etc. Upon purchase, it was delivered to our home in Dallas, TX via Passport Transport, enclosed, air-ride delivery, and has, to my best recollection, NEVER spent a night outside, much less out in inclement weather - that's what our truck is for. Even when traveling, we specifically stay at hotels with indoor garage parking (NO Valet, thank you - heck, I still ask permission if I want to take "her" car). I even made my own mother give up her garage when we visited once. Most of the time, this car is even cozy under a soft cotton cover here in the garage. Why? Because my wife hardly drives it. Actual mileage as of today is 68,663. Probably the lowest mileage '95 740 out there -how sad. But that is not even the whole story - on 11/11/98 with 21,812 miles on the car, BMW decided to replace the engine. If you are a BMW aficionado, you know this was because there were issues of premature wear of the cylinder liners on some '94 and early '95 similar engines. Personally I think the replacement was due to a slightly rough idle when started up after sitting for a few weeks, but who am I to argue with BMW Warranty Service?) So the engine has less than 47,000 miles on it. And what about service? Well, right about the time the warranty expired, the only technician from the local BMW dealer who had ever laid hands on the car opened his own BMW service shop, so naturally we followed him and he has serviced the car up to present day - Thank you, Nino. Most of the service is what you would consider routine, over the years we have replaced anything recommended at the earliest possible hint of wear or problems. Front sway bar bushings, lower control arm bushings along with some other front suspension parts at the time, because we believe when taking something apart, we might as well replace any other wear items at the same time. For example, when we recently replaced the radiator (side note - we ALWAYS use genuine BMW parts unless our mechanic has a darn good reason not to), we also replaced the hoses, thermostat etc. The rear shocks are Boge, as recommended rather than the original Bilsteins. The auxiliary fan for the A/C was replaced last year, again, genuine BMW, such that the A/C blows as cold as new. Oh, the A/C control was replaced under warranty and updated to the '96 and later style. Tires are the original style Continental's, probably good for another 10,000 miles. Spare is matched, of course. Nice fat 16" tires for the smoothest ride - I don't understand driving on thin little rubber bands, and most people I know driving on them have bent a rim already. Potholes are there for a reason - keeping the tire shops in business!Allright, let't talk about condition - well, the interior is about as perfect as you might expect from Mrs. Fussy herself. No drinks in the car, ever. What's a drive-through? We eat in restaurants, not in the car. No smoking, No pets, Not even a sticky fingered child (or messy adult...) I don't think shoes have ever touched the carpet, being covered by thick Persian rugs since day one. Persian rugs do not come with the car, sorry. Getting the picture yet? The exterior is as you would hope for as well. (never wrecked, for the record) In fact, anytime we hit the highway (most of the miles are highway miles - we have a small Mercedes for in town driving), we put on the front bra. Old style heavy duty vinyl custom made Colgan for the car of course (included). I just don't understand the new clear plastic stuff...but I digress. Back to the Bimmer - paint is near perfect - one little scratch by the gas filler door, (a reminder to never ever use full service, thank you, NOT) and a few of the most minor flyspecks in the front. No other dings, dents, scratches, worth mentioning. All the exterior plastic/lenses are near perfect compared to the so often seen sun damaged crazed plastic on cars that spend time outdoors. We replaced the rear door opening trim last year, I guess typical for this model, one side had a crack, so we replaced both sides. This car is simply a creampuff, kept clean, serviced, maintained and detailed since day one. Sunroof is solid metal - not glass. Here in Dallas, we are not interested in baking. Speaking of baking, one neat feature is with the key you can open the windows of the car as you walk towards it in the summer. I doubt there is a better one out there, but if there is, it probably isn't for sale. OK, so what about price? Honestly, its not about the money - we truly want this to be adopted by a loving family. The opening, no reserve, price is exactly what the BMW dealer offered on a trade for the new BMW my wife has just ordered. I've looked at the prices of these cars for the last six months or so as we have considered buying a new car. There was a nice '97 with similar miles a few weeks ago for just under 9 grand. This car has lower annual mileage, I believe in better condition, and does not require premium fuel, and is far less $$. The opening bid is about what decent cars with big miles and no real history are selling for. All manuals, tools, and paperwork (clear Texas title) in order. Not much fine print to include other than to say you must pay for the car before driving off. No funny money games, financing or whatever. You bid, you buy, you pay. Thank you. If you are coming from out of town, I'll be happy to pick you up at the airport, train, bus station, etc., but please, you are coming to pick up the car, not inspect it. You are welcome to ask questions and/or inspect prior to the auction ending, after that, please understand this simply a 17 year old used car. A super nice, well maintained, one owner nice one, but is being sold as absolutely as-is, where is, with no warranty whatsoever. My description is understandably prejudiced as we are serious about our cars, but in the end, you are responsible for your bid, and agreeing to the terms of this auction. Thank you, and I look forward to turning over the keys to the next real-person owner, not the dealer's errand boy to send to wherever.... Note: I looked at the AutoCheck report Ebay automatically adds - I have no idea where the last reported mileage, 64K in 2005 came from...either a mistype as it was probably 46k, but regardless, I have all the maintenance/mileage records from Day One should there be any further question about dates/mileage.On Jan-18-13 at 06:31:05 PST, seller added the following information: Couple of minor things to note based on numerous inquiries - the most common question is regarding the pixels in the dash display - yes, several of the little pixels are not working, applies to the outside temperature and trip odometer displays. This is very common - total odometer display is clear. As to the message center readout, a couple are out too...the only messages that come up on the display is Check Brake Lights because the left rear brake light bulb holder is a bit fidgety. This is occasional and is remedied by fussing with the bulb holder - car comes with a couple extra bulb holders as I kinda rotate them depending on what mood the car seems to be in. My mechanic says this is because the connection surface on the plastic degrades over time and changing the location of the contact, however minor, is about the only resolution short of changing the tail light housing. Noises, squeaks or rattles? On cold start, sometimes the converter plates rattle - audible from outside the car, but not from inside with the windows up. My mechanic has a trained ear for such things as I didn't notice until he pointed it out one day. Once the car warms up, they settle down. This does not effect emissions, as the car passes more stringent Dallas County emissions without any thought - no games. Finally, for some unknown reason, mostly in the summertime, the radio cuts out intermittently. We have not been able to diagnose this - or spent much time attempting to, as, well, frankly, my wife rarely drives with the radio on. Probably a connection that needs cleaning...but where...? Thanks to all for the detailed questions - certainly a good deal of interest in the car, and most questions seem to be from fans of this series who have owned one, or more of them. I understand and appreciate this loyalty. Will I end the auction early or add a buy it now? No. I mostly buy on ebay and really get fumed when something I am going to bid on disappears. I cannot add a buy it now because someone has already placed a bid. What it will sell for ? I have absolutely no idea - we all know the real bidding is in the last moments - I'm on the edge of my seat on this too - The opening bid is a giveaway price - I just felt that if someone was going to get a deal on this car, I preferred it to be the new owner, not the dealer. Thanks for all the interest, keep the questions coming! On Jan-20-13 at 17:01:17 PST, seller added the following information: Thank you for all your interest. I have several requests for additional pictures - I'm sorry I did not get to them this weekend. I promise I will email requested pictures by noon tomorrow. I have requests for dashboard photos - NO cracks, I think what is being requested is verification of the premium sound package, and also requested pictures of the pixels. Will do. Will also closeup the 1/4" scratch by the gas filler door. Also going to photo the headlight (lenses), yes clean and clear, and the frontal area to show very very limited fleabites. If y'all have any other requests, can you please make them this evening or first thing in the morning? Thank you - and please be sure to provide your email in a question to me for submittal of the pictures requested. On Jan-21-13 at 10:25:34 PST, seller added the following information: OK, final group of pictures loaded, dash, tires, scratch near gas filler door, front end showing fleabites, trunk to include tools, radio panel showing premium sound, window sticker and final shot in the driveway, just rinsed it off, mileage at noon today, 68,684. Should be all? thanks for all the compliments!
