Vehicle Detail
Greetings Ebayers. ****UPPDATE: I have had numerous questions regarding which engine the car has, and what engine the replacement motor is. The engine in the car is a "JH" code 1.8L rated@ 102hp. The replacement motor is also a "JH code 1.8L rated@ 102hp.**** ****I have also fielded questions regarding the odometer reading. The car's odometer currently reads 852,227 miles, with the sixth digit stuck in between 8 and 9. The odometer does not work. If you look at the vehicle history report, the vehicle turns up in a smog inspection with 300-plus K miles on it several years ago. Shortly thereafter the odometer was listed as EXEMPT. There is no way that this car has 800K miles on it....or even 300K. I didn't care about the odometer reading because I just planned on giving the car to my daughter. As stated below the car served as a second car and was driven only occasionally for several years. The previous owner related to me that it was his belief that the car had maybe 75 to 80K actual miles on it. It has not moved under it's own power in the two years that ive had it. I make no misrepresentations about this car being anything other than what it is....a really nice little project car. I am asking a little less than I have invested in it up to this point. I haven't the time, nor the room to work on it at this point in my life. The purchaser of this car...with just a little work, can have a nice, economical, vintage convertible to drive around in this spring. The mileage on this vehicle's title is currently listed as "EXEMPT", as the odometer is not functioning. This auction is subject to ending early if no bids have been posted, as the car is up for sale on other forums. Please read all of this before approaching me with any questions. Up for sale today is a 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet. This vehicle is a project vehicle and it does not presently run. I purchased this car to restore for my daughter. A nasty divorce, a subsequent custody battle have intervened and I no longer have the time to complete this project. Previously, the car was owned by a local real estate agent here in Reno Nevada. He used it as a daily driver until the head gasket blew and the number 2 cylinder filled with coolant. He then parked the car for several months. This is where yours truly entered the picture. Aside from the aforementioned blown head gasket...the car is in very good shape overall. I have spent absolutely no time scrubbing, cleaning or detailing the vehicle (as the pictures clearly demonstrate) and despite this, the pictures show well, IMHO. After dragging this car back to my house and parking it in my driveway (followed by much head-scratching from my neighbors) I set to the task of acquiring the various pieces that I would need to make a reliable driver out of it once again. My first stop in that endeavor was Z&S Imports ( www.zs-imports dot com ) in Pahrump, Nevada where I purchased a used 1.8L replacement engine that Z&S had sourced from Europe (see photos). This is a complete engine, minus the accessories, oil pan, etc. The original engine, which still resides in the car, could feasibly be made to run again with a head gasket replacement, but I figured that since that engine had most likely had suffered a hydraulic lock, a complete rebuild would be the only way to be certain that motor would not suffer a catastrophic failure down the line. Z&S compression tested the replacement engine and certified it....guaranteeing me that it had no more than 40 to 50K miles on it. I also purchased from them a new clutch disc, oil pump and the assorted gaskets that i'd need to put this little machine back together (see photos). The car is equipped with a K&N filter. I replaced the factory white spoke 13 inch wheels with the 14" aluminum ones that you see on the car now. The front tires are in pretty decent shape. The rear tires aren't May-Blo's....but the tread on them is worn down. All of the aforementioned accessories are included in the sale of this car. With just a little bit of initial work, this will be a very nice, very reliable car. The paint is in pretty decent condition and with a good waxing, it would shine up well. The lights, lenses, tail lamp housings and glass are all in good shape, except for the windshield, which is cracked. The body is almost perfectly straight, the only exception being a small dent in the right quarter (visible in the picture of the right side.) The damage is mostly to the wheel fairing that goes around the wheel opening molding. This fairing can be unbolted and repaired / replaced. That's as far as I got with the whole thing before my ex-wife made the decision to ransack the house and make off for Vegas. The car has been sitting since then and I have other projects that require my attention. I am therefore...offering this nice little car up for sale. What I am asking as an opening bid is about what I have into it. I will not make shipping arrangements for you, but I am very flexible and will try to work with you on getting it successfully shipped off to you. Local pickup is, of course, always free. I might even be willing transport the car a reasonable distance (like Sacramento)...at buyer's cost of course....for only the cost of fuel and the auto trailer rental required to move it. The car is located in Reno, Nevada. This car will be paid for in full, before any such arrangements are made. The other cars in the photos do not belong to me and are not for sale. Neither is the house, the cedar fence, garbage cans or the concrete driveway. I will accept personal checks, but as always, I will require that the funds are cleared in my bank before sale is completed. A deposit of 500 dollars will be required within 4 days of auction close, with the balance due paid in full prior to the car and title changing hands. Shipping: I will be more than happy to place the replacement motor into the interior the car (it's fairly lightweight....I can actually pick it up myself), if the buyer requests it, to facilitate shipping. This would of course, involve padding material and protective plastic film. I will not however...be responsible for any damages that may be incurred to the car's interior from doing so. The replacement motor might actually fit inside of the trunk compartment in the rear of the car. I haven't actually tried this. Transportation to the shipping terminal is buyer's responsibility, but being flexible, I may be persuaded into towing the car down to said terminal. Buyer will pay for the 50 dollar tow dolly fee required for me to do this. There will be no refunds so please be certain you want this car before you bid on it. If you have zero feedback you should approach me prior to placing a bid. No kooks or scams, please. I'm not interested in trading for your seized up John Deere Tractor engine or your vintage doll collection.
