Vehicle Detail

Please be patient, lots of high quality pictures to load. It's fair to say that most of us gearheads typically don't put Japanese cars in the classic/collector category. But now in 2012 as we look back, it's clear that while many of the cars being built here in the US were growing in size, and shrinking in power as the 1970's gave way to the 1980's, the Japanese were slowly, but surely making competent cars that were fuel efficient and cutting edge in comparison. And add to that, some very they made some very impressive sports cars and GT's. The stunning 1967 Toyota 2000 GT, 1967 Datsun Fairlady Roadster, 1970 Datsun 240Z, 1971 Toyota Celica and 1979 Mazda RX-7, among others, all come to mind. And certainly among this group of exceptional cars was the Toyota Supra. The second generation Mark ll Supra, produced from 1982 - 1985 1/2 was among the most sophisticated cars produced during the 1980's. In 1977 Triumph dubbed their then new TR-7 wedged design, "The shape of things to come" as it pulled into a triangular profile shaped garage in those old commercials. While they had the right idea, the execution, lacked. But then Toyota unveiled the second generation Supra. The first generation was basically a tarted up Celica with an underpowered single cam six. Now with all new stunning angular style, silky smooth 2.8 liter twin cam straight six, fuel injected power plant, precise 5 speed manual transmission, fully independent front and rear suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes, it all added up to one spectacular sports/GT that made it's contemporaries look positively dated overnight. And the build quality was, and still is truly impressive. Oh and it got 25 mpg to boot. "Oh What a Feeling" indeed! This particular Supra is owned by a close friend of mine. He is a very serious car collector. In 2010, he had been searching for "the" Supra for some time when he ran across this one. My friend is very meticulous about his cars. He has some truly amazing autos in his collection. And this Supra is no exception. It has just 64,000 original miles and is a true survivor. HISTORY - This 1983 Toyota Supra was bought new in Virgina as a suprise graduation present by a generous uncle. Apparently the recipient was very fond of these Supras. Amazingly, the graduate's mother had purchased him a Supra as well for graduation. The mother and uncle never knew the other one was buying him a car. Unbelievable! I think I got $25 cash for my graduation. But I digress. The uncle, upon finding Mom bought him one as well, kept this Supra stored, and a secret. Some years later, the Supra from his mother was stolen. Heartbroken, the uncle invited his distraught nephew over to his house, where he consoled him and presented him with the Supra that he had stored away all those years. I wish this family would adopt me! Oh, but I digress. Some time after, the uncle passed away and the young man, now a middle aged man, found himself in financial trouble. And he was forced to sell the Supra. And so my friend became the proud owner of this black beauty. During the 2 years he has owned the car, he has driven it very little, mostly on warm Rhode Island summer days, when the weather and his busy schedule would allow. But with a number of cars in his stable, the Supra just was not getting the attention he felt is should have. The car now has just over 65,000 original, pampered miles. And so knowing full well he will not get back what he paid for the car, he has asked me to help him sell this beautiful Toyota. He just wants to move on and let somebody else enjoy the car as it was meant, and use the money for another project. My friend is not much of a computer guy, but he is a car guy, to the core. He has discriminating taste and the means to own some truly spectacular automobiles. And once in a while he decides to sell one of his meticulously maintained cars, sometimes to help finance another automobile for his collection. EQUIPMENT / OPTIONS - all equipment performs properly except where noted * In 1983, the Supra was Toyota's flagship sports car. As such, they loaded them with goodies as standard equipment and offered few premium options beyond that. About the only option not on this example is leather seats. Here is what it does have:P Performance Model - (fender flares, full analog instumentation, upgraded suspension, limited slip differential, headlight washers, rear spoiler/sunshade, wider width alloy wheels.2.8 liter fuel injected twin cam straight six cylinder engine5 speed manual transmissionLimited slip differentialVariable assist power rack and pinion steeringFully independent front and rear suspensionGas filled shocksPower 4 wheel disc brakes*Automatic temperature controlled air conditioning - a/c functions and is complete, but air does not blow cold, could be as simple as an evac and recharge?Power windowsPower locksPower SunroofPower left and right side mirrorsCruise controlTilt Wheel*AM-FM Stereo Tuner w/ cassette and equalizer w/ 5 factory speakers - radio currently not working, possibly fuse related?Ebony black two stage exterior paint (original)Black/gray 2 tone cloth interior (original)8 way adjustable driver's seatThere are numerous other features that offer convenience such as an underhood light that extends, an in-console light that also extends and many other thoughtful features that set these cars apart from their peers. EXTERIOR - The finish on this Supra is the original factory applied Toyota Ebony Black, now an amazing 30 model years old. The flaws are few and far between. The paint is deep and lustrous, body panels, untouched and as straight as the day it left the factory. Please look closely at the pics below. EXTERIOR CLOSE-UPS - INTERIOR, FRONT SEAT AREA - The interior has very little wear wear, even the "fishnet" map pockets behind the front seats are very nice, upholstery has no rips or holes, carpet is beautiful, no funny smells either. The front driver's seat is truly an engineering marvel. It adjusts in ways only dreamt about in 1983 with thigh adjust, seat cushion adjust, headrest adjust, seat recliner, side bolster adjust and a 3 chamber adjustable air filled bladder system that adjusts to your lower back and makes long distance driving a true pleasure. The beautiful condition of the interior makes it easy to imagine sitting in one of these back in 1983. INTERIOR, REAR SEAT AREA - REAR HATCH / CARGO AREA - ENGINE COMPARTMENT - UNDERSIDE - DRIVING IMPRESSIONS - If you have never driven one of these Mark ll Supras, you are in for a real treat, if you have, then you already know how advanced these cars were, and how contemporary they still feel. Compare this car to an '83 Mustang, Camaro or Firebird and the differences are like night and day. Get in this example, shut the door, solid. The fuel injected 2.8 liter twin cam six fires instantly. It idles very smooth and is whisper quiet. Put it in first gear and accelerate. These cars were never meant to be dragstrip kings. That being said. it accelerates strong and oh so silky smooth. The power is consistant all the way to redline. The 5 speed manual trans shifts buttery smooth, with absolute precision. As you enter an interstate on ramp, just press down the she responds nicely. You can drive this car effortlessly at highway speeds, or if you're inclined, well beyond, all day long. If you enjoy the twisty backroads as I do, that's where this Supra really shines. It's really hard to imagine tossing your '83 domestic car around like this and not ending up over an embankment. The variable ratio power rack and pinion steering is tight and responsive and gives you excellent road feel and just the right amount of resistance. The 4 wheel fully independent suspension offers a perfect combination of sports car firmness and GT comfort. You can carry from 1 to 3 passengers and have a great time doing it. Or just you and the open road. The power 4 wheel disc brakes bring the car to a stop with confidence, no pulling or vibration. The entire car has a feeling of solidity, as if it was machined from a single piece. If Apple made a car, this would be it! I can't stress enough that for a 30 year old car, it feels very contemporary. Toyota really did this car right. Oh, and one last thing to consider in these days of gas hovering around $4 a gallon. You can get about 25 miles to the gallon on the highway, about 18 - 20 around town, simply amazing. Try that in your mid '80's Corvette. FINAL THOUGHTS - In looking at and driving this Supra, it's quite easy to tell it has led a very pampered life. The virgin body is virtually as new, paint is and body are mint original, no rust or repairs ever, the interior shows minimal wear, the performance is as they say, "tight and right." If you do the math, 65,000 miles divided into 30 years comes to about 2166 miles a year. Clearly she was used sparingly. There is nothing quite like a low mileage original survivor car. To experience what a 30 year old performance car felt like, drove like and perhaps most importantly, makes you feel like, cannot be truly achieved once a car has been rebuilt or restored. They are only original once. But this car transports you back in time 30 years ago and leaves no doubt how Toyota engineers thought, felt and where their passions were. It is truly an exceptional automobile cared for by meticulous owners, resulting into the stunning car you see before you. The car is located in Warwick, Rhode Island. If you want to see the car in person or have it inspected, the owner is more than happy to assist. If transport is required once purchase is made, he will be there to make sure the car is loaded corrected by your carrier of choice and that things go smoothly. While this is not my car, I have spent a fair amount of time with it as well as owning an '85 Supra myself, yes that's mine in the background of some of the pics, which I recently sold after owning and enjoying 2 years. So I am well versed in these fine cars. Feel free to ask any questions. If I cannot answer them, the owner, my friend will. I have known him for over a decade. He is as honest a gent as I have ever known and is very passionate about his cars. He does not "flip" cars as often goes on today. In fact, when he contacted me to sell the Supra, I was quite surprised as typically he hangs onto them for many years. He asked me to place what I thought was a very low reserve considering the originality and quality of this car. But please don't ask me the reserve, bid what you are comfortable with and enjoy the process. Payment is expected within 7 days after close of auction via cash in person, bank to bank wire transfer or a certified back check, which must clear before the car will be released. Shipping cost and setup is the buyers responsibility. If timing or transport setup is an issue, the car can be kept in his climate controlled building for a month or so, if car has been paid for in full. Thanks for taking the time and enjoy bidding! On Oct-08-12 at 16:07:28 PDT, seller added the following information: Good Monday Evening Ebayers!I wanted to give a quick update. With a little over 6 days left to go in this auction, there has been a flurry of interest. To date, 1854 views, 100 watchers, 13 bids. Current bid is $6600. I have spoken with the owner and he said to go ahead an reveal the reserve. So that said, the RESERVE is set at $7000. So you are just $400 shy of that, not very far at all. At this point, he is hoping the car goes to a good home, but fully intends to let her go. So keep those bids coming folks and have a great week! On Oct-13-12 at 07:21:01 PDT, seller added the following information: Well folks, it's Saturday morning and there is just 1 day and 11 hours left till auction's end. To date, a whopping 3835 views, 151 watchers and 17 bids. The reserve was met several days ago and the price is currently $7600. So the car WILL sell to the highest bidder tomorrow night. So keep those bids coming and have a great weekend. Some lucky person will be the new owner Sunday night.
