Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is this 1970 Corvette Convertible. I recently purchased this car for a winter project but upon arrival I feel it is going to need a little more work then I can do. Here is the description from the guy I bought the car from. A true Barn Find. Up for auction is a 1970 Corvette Convertible. I was contacted by a friend who owns the car. He asked if I would list it on Ebay for him. He is at the point where he felt he would not be in the position to restore it. The car had been in storage for over twenty years. I got my books and flashlight and drove a couple hours to where the car was stored. The owner Dan told me that he bought the car in its current condition and it had been sitting since the late 80's. It had been painted red. He was told when he bought it that the engine had been replaced. It seems now to be stuck. I tried to turn it over by rocking the car in gear. I have several GM/ Chevy books and here is what I found. First the drivetrain: The block is from the 70's I believe. The heads look to be original to the car and have the correct casting numbers and double hump markings. The intake is an Edelbrock and the carb is a Holley. These seem to be add ons. The exhaust manifolds are original. The distributor is not original. All components and brackets are complete. The trans looks to be an M21 and I could shift it into all gears. I could not get far enough under the car to get the numbers, but judging by the patina on all the components it most likely the original. Same goes for the rear end. I think this is accurate because the car is so complete and has been away for so long that I dont think its ever been fully apart or a basket case. The body started its life as a code 984 Daytona Yellow Convertible. In the early 80's or thereabouts it was painted red. The paint is actually in usable shape. . The paint looks terrible in the photos because it has thick layer of dust and grime on it.All of the panels are very straight and it appears that it has never been hit or damaged. All of the chrome bumpers are driver quality. The glass is all intact. Roof frame is complete but top is bad. Dan removed the old seats and carpets long ago and tossed them. Years later this has proven to be a mistake. The dash/cluster is complete minus the radio but needs refurbishing. Dashpad is nice. Door panels are also usable. I discovered that the tachometer has a 6000RPM redline which was correct for a car with the L46 option, 350cu. in./350hp I figured this may be accurate seeing as the car was complete and not optioned for comfort. NO ps,pb,air cond. The underside of the car is crusty and dirty from both its earlier life and prolonged storage. The frame is solid but I did find a small hole ahead of the passengers wheel. The floors are solid. The description is pretty accurate. The frame is going to need attention. There is a hole in the right rear before the tire and the cross member that the differential front mount attaches to needs repair. I'm not a welder so I don't know how hard it would be to repair. This will be a beautiful car when finished.
