Vehicle Detail

1966 Triumph TR4-A IRS Beautiful car with an older restoration that has held up very well. Bright red with a black interior, white top, black tonneau cover, 4-speed (no overdrive) and chrome wire wheels. Background This car was purchased in the late ‘80s by a gentleman in Ohio believed to be the second owner. It was driven and upgraded periodically throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s. During that time the car was painted bright red lacquer (originally dark red) and the interior carpets, seat covers, door panels, trunk carpet and trim were all replaced. Exterior and mechanical upgrades included new chrome trim, chrome wire wheels, steering rack, shocks and other minor mechanical work. I have receipts for all of the work the previous owner did documenting the exact components which were replaced. The car was used sparingly on sunny days for car shows and Sunday drives and stored in a heated garage during the winter. As a result, the paint and other work have held up well over the last 20+ years due to the limited use and indoor storage. Due to some health issues, the prior owner was unable to enjoy the car for the last couple of years and it was not often driven. Having never owned a British car or a convertible and always being fond of TR4’s, I found this car and decided to take the plunge. I’ve had the car since late March and have enjoyed it a great deal, but other projects are taking priority so it’s time to move on. Recent Work Since the car hadn’t been driven much in the last few years it was in need of a few items to get it road-worthy again. The work I’ve done (all since April) to the car is listed below. While I was doing work in the engine compartment, I decided I might as well freshen things up a bit and sanded and re-painted the engine compartment (was already black from the previous owner), painted the radiator, cleaned up the wiring harness and a few other odds and ends to tidy things up. Just Replaced/Rebuilt: · New battery · New hoses/clamps on cooling system · New thermostat · New belt · New fuel hoses and filter · Carburetors rebuilt - ultrasonic cleaned, new throttle shafts, jets, cleaned/lubed linkage etc. · New valve cover gasket · Adjusted valves · Rebuilt all the bake hydraulics – master cylinder, calipers, new wheel cylinders, new rear adjusters, new flex hoses · Rebuilt clutch hydraulics – master cylinder and slave · New steering rack mount bushings · Rebuilt front suspension – new bushings, upper ball joints, lower trunnion bushings, spring isolators, shocks, cleaned and painted control arms etc. · New tires/tubes – Vredestein Sprint Classics 165HR15 Condition I would describe the car as a very clean driver. It is not a concourse car, but (at the risk of using an overused term) it “presents” very well and could easily be taken to local shows. The paint still looks great but does have a few scratches and nicks and a ding or two here and there. There is a dent in the right side rocker. It is very low and it hasn’t bothered me so I haven’t fixed it. I have not found any rust or evidence of rust repair anywhere on the body. The frame seems to be in good shape as well, but I did find some evidence of previous rust repair that I’ve tried to show in the pictures. The top was replaced by the previous owner and is in good shape – no tears and the rear window is a bit foggy but not yellowed. The interior is very clean and the dash wood is in excellent shape. The seats and carpet are starting to show just a bit of wear but still look great. The chrome is in excellent condition, with the exception of the front side marker lights and the taillights that are starting to show some slight pitting. The chrome wire wheels are in perfect condition and have brand new tires and tubes as mentioned above. Mechanically, with the recent work, it is in great condition. It starts instantly and runs well. I ran a compression test before I bought it and it measured 165-165-170-160 psi. There is occasionally a bit of smoke on startup, but it goes away immediately and I don’t see any when driving. The transmission shifts very well and all the syncros are in good condition. The steering is tight and it rides and handles well. Electrically, all of the lights and signals work properly. All of the gauges work - with the exception of the odometer. This is why I can’t say for sure what the mileage is. A couple of the auxiliary gauge lights don’t illuminate. The radio and heater blower motor are not working. Know issues/things I would do next if I were going to keep it: As mentioned, the dent in the right side rocker and the few minor electrical issues. Misc. There are a few spare/original parts that come with the car: · Tonneau cover (mentioned above) · Original steel wheels and hubcaps (one is in the trunk and the other 4 in boxes) · Original valve cover · Triumph radio (previous owner bought it, but it looks like it’s for a TR6) · Miscellaneous original trim pieces, chrome etc. Additional pics can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/86501644@N03/sets/72157631390588820/Please contact me with any questions or to arrange to view/inspect the car. I reserve the right to end the auction early as I am advertising the car locally.
