Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a nice 1959 Mercury Monterey 2 door sedan. The car has a 312 V8 engine with a 3-speed on the column manual transmission. Glass is good. It does have factory power steering. I also bought new chrome valave covers and a shop manual that go with it. The drivers side tail light is cracked. A majority of the chrome is off the car as it was repaintd 2 years ago by the previous owner. This would make a good daily driver with a little work. The front seat should be redone. Back seat is ok. I bought this car for my elderly father who had one in high school. Sadly he has no interest in it at this point so it must go. I have too many other projects (58 Plymouth, WWII Jeep, 51 Chevy PU) otherwise I'd keep it and do a mild custom to it. This would look sharp with a blue interior and blue highlights painted such as the fins/projectiles. I repalced the ignition coil and solenoid and battery cables. I put a charger on the battery and the engine turned over just fine. I couldn't get it to stay running so I took off the Holley carb and started cleaning it up. It will need a rebuild kit or replacement with a more modern carb. I did not do any of the bodywork on this car so I don't know what has been patched or repaired. I removed the trunk mat and the trunk floor looks like it just has surface rust. I did not see any rust holes. I've kept it garged except occasionally in the summer. The back floor baords sounded fine when I pounded on them. When I pounded on the front floor boaards I heard a tin sound on the drivers side so I pulled up the ruberized floor mat and found someone patched in a piece of sheet metal over a small hole under the pedals. This would be okay for a daily driver but should be properly replaced if you want to build a show car. I don't think the rims are original either. The brakes would need some attention before ti would be safe to drive so it's being listed as nondriveable. It does not have a radio but a factory delete plate instead. I was going to put a radio in the glove box with an Ipod/MP3 player jack. It does come with a clear South Dakota title in my name along with a bill of sale. It is currently licensed. Weight is 3957 lbs. I can help load it if need be. Also the car can sit for a while if you need time to come get the car as long as it's paid for. The car is also for sale locally so I do reserve the right to end the auction. If you have any questions please ask before you bid. On Jul-09-12 at 23:08:01 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE: I've gotten a lot of questions relating to what the body was like before paint. Sadly I can not answer as I do not know. I did not paint the car. I'm guess it probably had a few dents and dings. My plan for the car was just to get it up and running as a Sunday driver for my father. I wasn't going to do a frame-off restoration on this car. I had looked for one for close to 10 years that was in my price range when I found this one. The ones sitting rusting in junkyards I've checked into are listed for more than mine. The paint is fair and looks good from 10 ft away. Having said that whoever painted it did it quick. I like to remove everything (door handles, bumpers, etc) to paint a car and get all of the small details (door jams, underside of the hood and trunk) which was not done on this car. I did remove the front floor mat and also removed the metal piece over the floor board hole. I started vacuuming out the trunk. People have asked if I'm do this or that to the car... let me be clear: the auction is for the car only. I do have a key which fits the ignition and doors. I tried it on the trunk tonight but it did not fit. There were several keys in the glove box when I bought the car but I have not tried any of them. Not even sure if they are still there.
