At the time of its introduction, the 365 GT 2+2 represented significant advances for Ferrari, particularly their 2+2 models. The combination of independent suspension all around for the first time on a 2+2 model and the new torque tube arrangement made the cars quieter and more comfortable than ever before. The inclusion of additional convenience and luxury features further enhanced the car’s comfort, while the familiar front-mounted 4.4 liter V12 and striking Pininfarina styling ensured that the car retained all of the traditional positive Ferrari traits.
This particular car is a unique example with interesting history that has been nicely restored. As confirmed by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, this car is an early 365 GT 2+2 and was the prototype for the US version of the car. It was sold new in the United States via Luigi Chinetti to a member of the Pinkerton family in New York (of Pinkerton Security). The previous owner also reports that the car was the Paris Auto Show car, and like many 2+2’s the car is well-equipped with air conditioning, power brakes, and power steering. As a 1967 model, the car is thankfully free of the troublesome and power-robbing emissions equipment that became mandatory in 1968. The car also has what are ordinarily considered to be European only details such as the engraved steering wheel spokes and electric quarter windows. This car is well equipped with period Blaupunkt radio, tools and desirable Borrani wire wheels, which wear Michelin XWX tires.
In recent years, the car has seen much cosmetic and mechanical attention, including full repaint and new leather interior. The Koni shock absorbers were rebuilt by Koni, including the self-leveling system, which works properly. In January of 2009, the valves were adjusted, new spark plugs and ignition wires fitted, the distributor caps serviced and the ignition rotors replaced. The brakes were bled, the soft lines replaced, and new seals fitted. This work was performed at GTC by Harley Cluxton. In February of 2009, a new Ansa exhaust system, new sway bar mounts, and new sway bar bushings were fitted. The carburetors were also adjusted at this time. This and subsequent work was performed by Johannes Huwyler at Dino Motors. In October 2009, the radiator was recored, the hoses replaced, the fan motors were repaired and serviced, and the air conditioning condenser was repaired. All told, the car has had over $13,000 in mechanical work since the beginning of 2009. In August of 2009, the car was invited to be shown at the Quail Motorsports Gathering in Monterey, and the owner has put several thousand miles on the car over this period, ensuring that it is sorted and ready to use at this time.
The car is in excellent cosmetic condition, with high quality paintwork over properly fitting and straight panels. The chrome is in good condition, with some light pitting on the bumpers. The remaining chrome is very good, with only light scratching. The glass and lamps are in good shape, with light wear only to the windscreen. The wheels are in very nice condition.
The interior is in very nice shape, and has been redone as necessary. Where possible, the interior was left original, which includes the dashboard and instruments. The door panels, carpets, headliner and seats have all been redone and are very nice, particularly the headliner and rear parcel shelf, which are both impressive. The dashboard, wood, and instruments appear to be original and are in very good condition considering this. Dash Leather have bben recently redone and the carpets are thick pile and are in good shape.
The engine compartment is predominantly original in appearance, and is quite clean. The knurled air cleaner keepers remain, as does the windscreen washer bag. The car also has most of its decals in the engine compartment. The trunk appears to have been restored and is excellent. The car retains its tool roll and jack bag with jack.
This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a superb example of this underappreciated model. With lovely styling reminiscent of the Princess de Rethy 330 and 500 Superfast, as well as a capable powertrain and comparatively modern chassis, a nicely sorted 365 GT 2+2 is a pleasure to own and use. It is presented here in great colors, excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, unique history.
