Vehicle Detail

1960 Nash MetropolitanTurquoise and White 3 speed manual transmission ("3 on the tree"). 4 Cylinder engine. Clear title in hand. If you are near the Charlottesville, Virginia area, I would be happy to arrange a time to view or test the car in person before you place a bid.Video of this Metropolitan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJVgsyxl53o1960 Nash Metropolitan in very good condition. I am the third owner and it has been kept garaged/covered in sunny California until late 2011. My wife and I moved to the Charlottesville, VA area recently and we had the Metropolitan shipped out from California via covered carrier. I bought it in 2005, and I have absolutely loved owning this car. Some of the work I've had professionally done to it in the past seven years includes: Replacing or repairing the following items: Starter, Generator, Oil Pressure Gauge, Voltage Regulator, Brake Light Switch, Carburetor, Electronic Ignition, Ignition Coil, Hoses, Wiring, Spark Plugs, Battery Box, Battery, Speedometer, Side Mirrors, Radio Knobs, Leaf Springs, Headlights, Brakes, Brake Cylinder, Radiator Cap, Rear Light Covers & Bezels, Rear License Plate Light, etc.The following items have been modified: Carburetor (it now has a dual carb system for a little extra power), Temperature gauge added under dash, Front Seat Belts (the car originally didn't come with seat belts. Seat belts were added in the front only. The rear seat does not have any seat belts), Driver-side and passenger-side mirrors were installed, Push-Button Start (originally it had a pull-start), Locking gas cap, Oil filter adapter (makes the filter easy to reach), Negative Ground (originally the car was positive ground. The AM tube radio in the car still worked up until the time the polarity was switched, but it had to be disconnected during the switch so it wouldn't be shorted out. I left it installed in the dash.), Locking Choke Knob (you pull it out and turn it clockwise to lock it into place), Also, there's a theft-deterrent "kill switch" installed under the dash. It shuts off power to the fuel pump when switched. As far as I know, the only small problems with the car are: The right turn signal lights work but there's a problem with the flasher, so the turn signal blinking (on the right side only) has to be done by manually turning the knob back and forth (The left turn signal functions properly). The new speedometer (installed ~2010) works, but it needs to be properly adjusted. Right now it reads roughly 10mph fast (so if you're driving 50mph, it will read around 60mph). Sometimes the passenger window gets difficult to crank at about 3/4 of the way down (may just need some lubrication). The previous owner had the chrome grill pieces removed to repaint the car about 12 to 15 years ago, and they were reinstalled crooked, so some of them need to be realigned. The wiring harness could use a replacement, as some of the wiring insulation is looking worn and deteriorated. Also, since the car has almost always been garaged or covered in Southern California, there's really not a lot of rust spots on it for it's age. It does have tiny rust spots, dings in the paint, chipped and tarnished chrome in some areas (touched up with chrome paint), and chips in the glass that would be typical of most cars that are 52 years old and still on the road. Some of the paint was touched-up by the previous owner, and the color spots are a bit off, but it's only noticeable from a close distance. The worst rust spots are on each door in the bottom corner. Apparently this is a common problem with Metropolitans. I removed the rust and patched the holes, but I didn't do a good job matching the white paint and finishing the job because my wife broke her back during the time I was working on the project (She fell off a horse, so I devoted my time and attention to her, and not the car. She has completely recovered since then, but I never found the time to go back and finish the job better than what I originally did). Also, the windshield wiper motor has issues. It works at first, but after a while it will stop working. I bought a replacement wiper motor, but haven't installed it (I only drove the car on nice sunny days in California, so I rarely had to use the wipers). The only body damage is a small horizontal dent along the front of the rear passenger side fender (the previous owner skimmed a curb while parking), but it really isn't too noticeable. Also, the heater worked the last time I used it, but it's currently not wired up. It was disconnected during some electrical repairs a few years ago, and never hooked back up (being in Southern California and only driving the car on nice sunny days, I never used it). It should still work when reconnected. There are some small cracks in the steering wheel. The steering wheel looks slightly out of line, but the wheels have been aligned, so it's more of a cosmetic issue and doesn't affect driving the car. One more thing I remembered: The gas gauge isn't always completely accurate. It will usually read as completely full if the tank is between half full to completely full. Sometimes the needle will fluctuate around the middle if the tank is filled halfway or less. This is never an issue for me, as I always try to keep plenty of gas in the car when I drive it a lot. Overall, this is a beautiful car that gets attention wherever I drive it. It's not a "Concours" car, but it's still in really good shape and always attracts a lot of attention when I drive it around town or take it to car shows. I'm not sure of the actual mileage on the car, but the new speedometer installed a few years ago reads 9566 miles (as of April 29, 2012). I've found people young and old who love this little Nash, and it's always been fun hearing people's stories of someone they knew who drove one. I've been told by kids "That's the coolest car ever!", and the sight of this car once almost brought a woman to tears when she told me how she learned to drive in a Nash Metropolitan, and all the fun she had while owning it. The data plates read: Body#: 79383 Model#: 562 Trim#: T971 Paint#: P914-P912 Chassis Serial# (VIN): E78338 Engine#: 1H 147753 If you plan on shipping this Metropolitan, please be aware that the narrow width of the car prevents it from fitting on many rental car carriers, including the "Auto Transport" carriers you can rent from Uhaul. This is because most rental car carriers have one ramp and tire channel per side, instead of having a flatbed with a single ramp. The inside width measurement between the tires on the Nash is just a little too small (approximately 39 inches) and prevent it from being able to drive up the separate tires ramps and fit on the auto transport carrier. A lot of car shipping companies have flatbed trailers that will accommodate the Metropolitan. Just be sure to let them know while making shipping arrangements. A car carrier truck won't be able to fit in the area where we live, so I'd be happy to drive the car to a better location in the Charlottesville, Virginia area for pick-up once the winning bidder finalizes all shipping plans.
