The 940 was a car built when Volvos were known for three things: being well built, long lasting, and safe. The 940 was built to be a practical, reliable automobile and it has passed the test of time. You can still regularly see these cars in good condition with over a quarter of a million miles on them. This one for sale is a very good example of one that was well kept and should keep going for a long time.This 940 has the 2.3L 4 cylinder engine and automatic transmission with overdrive. The engine in in good order and exactly what it should be. The older Volvo 4 cylinders were known for being torquey and reliable. This one runs like a champ. It’s not going to win any races at the drag strip, but it is not underpowered. The timing belt was last changed at 97k miles in 2006. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The suspension is in great shape. It feels very solid and drive straight and smooth at 80mph. The ABS brakes stop strong. The muffler and tail pipe have just been replaced (you can still see the sticker in the pictures). There is some noise from a rattlely exhaust hanger or clamp.The exterior of this car is in very good condition. The white paint is in very good condition, with less small scratches and blemishes than expected for the age and mileage. (see pics) The bumpers are likewise in very good shape. Considering this car has Annapolis city parking permits, it is in excellent shape for a city car. The wheels and hubcaps look good. The tires are quality Continental radials with good tread depth. The interior of this car is in above average condition. The comfortable tan fabric seats are not stained or torn and have good cushions. There is some sun fading of the dash panels, as is common on older Volvos. The carpets are in good condition with less than expected wear. There is a full set of aftermarket floor mats.
