Vehicle Detail

Please read this carefully. I have tried to describe the vehicle up for auction as accurately as possible. Also, the buyer is responsible for reading and understanding the terms and conditions of the sale and his/her responsibilities after the sale. Yep, I've been burned before! Happy Bidding! Up for auction is my 1984 Porsche 911 Cabriolet (convertible). I bought the car just over 2 years ago for my wife, but we're running out of room in the garages and it doesn't get driven much, so we're sending it to a new home. I intend to explain the flaws in the car as completely and comprehensively as I can. Just keep in mind, that this tends to make the car sound like a basket case, which is far from the truth. It's a good looking and good running car that we don't hesitate run to the beach for the day in, or run out for a few groceries or dinner in (just keep the grocery shopping light. The car storage space fills up fast). :) The being said, it certainly isn't going to win a Concours D'elegance as it could use a little tidying up, but the car runs and drives just fine. The car came to me with decent service history with much of the work being done at Butch Stokes Automotive in Florida, who is known for his Porsche expertise. I will include whatever maintenance records I have, but the paperwork was caught in a cellar flood and I couldn't save about 1/4 of it. I was told when I bought the car that it had never been farther north than Orlando, FL (other that a brief stint in Zuffenhausen Germany). The first owner was from Miami and the second owners were from Fort Lauderdale, FL. First I will list the flaws which I know the car has and then I will go through the prior owners' major maintenance and then what I have done in the last 2 years. Electrically, the car has the typical Porsche "gremlins". The interior light has a short so I have pulled the fuse. This is a cheap and easy fix. The blower switch in the center console has been removed, but the hole and wiring harness are still there, it just needs a switch. The A/C is an old R12 system. We only took the car out on decent days with the top down, so I have no idea if any of it works or not. The power side mirrors don't work. I don't know it it's the switch, the motors, or both. The windshield has a small star crack right where the old rear view mirror was mounted. Not noticeable while driving , but visible from the outside. The windshield washer motor was totally corroded (a common problem because Porsche mounted them in the battery box) so it was removed and would need to be replaced (cheap and easy with a universal washer pump). The tachometer will intermittently go out. Usually a tap on the glass will bring it back online (makes you feel like an old WWII bomber pilot running out of gas and tapping the gauges) but was intermittent (and expensive) enough to me to overlook for the few miles we put on it. The oil level gauge works, but the sender isn't working (the oil PRESSURE gauge works fine). The seats are in horrible shape and would need to be either replaced or redone. I have some vinyl covers on them now to make them tolerable. The speedometer/odometer was repaired by the last owner and they stated to me that the car probably has about 800-1200 more miles on it than it indicates. This was also reported to Carfax so an odometer alert came up when I bought the car and will probably still be there. When I replaced the inside panels, the driver's side door pocket/armrest was in horrible shape so I didn't put it back on. The top is only a few years old, but the rear plastic window has a crack which is about 2" long in the lower right side. The rest of the top is in fine shape (although I'd go back to black if I were going to keep the car any longer). The transmission received a refurb in 2003 (whatever that means. I'm just going by the receipts. It was $525.) but I think the tranny could use a little TLC. Shifts fine, but gets a little crunchy if you try and run through the gears too fast. In addition to this there are the typical chips, little oil leaks, and squeaks that you'll find in a car that celebrated its 28th birthday. Now, if I didn't scare you off with the "bad news", stick around for the good news and start bidding! I am the owner of a few sports cars, supercars, and motorcycles. I'm very diligent about maintenance. The oil on the car has been changed twice a year (once in the spring when it came out of winter storage, and once again before it got put away for the winter. The car was always kept in a fully enclosed garage and stored for the winter in a garage with an additional cover. I have never tracked or raced the car. The car has never been in an accident as far as I can tell, and has no evidence of damage. The car was painted by the previous owner in the original Guards Red. It isn't the greatest paint job in the world, but it'll certainly do for your "driver". In '03, the car received an "engine out" service for about $8700 to include R&R of the transmission, new valve guides, new rings, oil seals, aftermarket cam, all new engine gaskets to include head gaskets. New exhaust studs, new slide rails for the timing chain, a new dual outlet muffler, oil pressure sender, reference sensor, a few oil hoses and a new convertible top. In 2010, right before I purchased the car, they had 4 new brake rotors, all new brake pads, at least one of the brake calipers redone, and the DME relay repaired. These listed items are either from the previous owner or garnered from receipts. The following was done to the car by me after I purchased the car in February of 2010. The car has had only a few thousand miles put on it since then. The alternator was replaced with a Bosche alternator because the bearing was failing on the old one. The starter was replaced with a high torque starter. I installed a Porsche factory short shift kit and new shifter. I also replaced all of the shifter bushings and shift coupler. Both of the axle half shafts were pulled, cleaned, re-greased and all new CV boots and bolts were installed. I installed a Porsche factory rear tail/spoiler. The rubber is in perfect condition. I also deleted the rear bumperettes (the bumperettes were a modification that Porsche had to make to all US spec 911's and they looked horrible). The turn signal/hi-lo beam switch was replaced with a new unit (common failure). The interior carpets were replaced with OEM style carpet. The battery was replaced in 2011. The inner door panels were replaced. All of the instrument cluster bulbs were replaced. Front hood struts were replaced. I ordered and installed a strut kit for the rear hood because of the increased weight after I added the tail, but I didn't like the way it twisted the hood when it was closed so I just use a "redneck" prop rod when I'm working on the car now. New shift knob. New plugs, wires, ignition coil, fuel filter and belts. ABS plastic floorboard on the driver's side and a new plywood one on the P/S. New left and right tail lenses and seals on the back of the car and I replaced at least one of the turn signal and one of the side marker lenses in the front. I also replaced the inner headlight buckets because the inner mounts were rusty. Included in the sale will be 2 keys (I believe both are replacements), the owner's manual, and the ever-handy 101 Projects For Your Porsche 911 book. A $500 deposit will be due via PayPal within 48 hours of the auction closing. The remainder must be paid within 7 days of the end of the auction either by cash, US Postal Money Order, or certified bank check drawn on a US bank. I may, at my discretion, hold the title, the car, or both until the funds have been verified or the bank check clears. The buyer may also choose to use a reputable escrow service such as Escrow.com whereas the buyer and seller will each be responsible for 50% of the escrow fee. The buyer is responsible for all shipping arrangements and fees. The car is located in Jefferson, MD which is just southwest of Frederick, MD or 50 miles northwest of Washington, DC. I will, as much as my work schedule allows, assist with any shipping logistics (meeting the shipping agent, etc). If you have any special needs or requests which differ from this, please email me BEFORE bidding. I will sell to overseas bidders, however, you must purchase through a US agent using US funds. Any inspections must be done prior to bidding. I have done my best to describe the car (and it's faults) as accurately as possible. Lastly, please don't email me with low-ball offers. I have a few people in the local area who would be happy to take the car off my hands for a song. We're not pregnant. I'm not getting a divorce, losing my job, losing my house, or struggling with college tuition payments. In other words, I don't "need" the money, I just hate to see the car sit in the garage and not be enjoyed. If you need a specific pic of the car or have a question, please don't hesitate to email me. Also, if you have any general questions on parts, service, or just want to join a great group of people talking about Porsches, go over to PelicanParts.com and look at their parts list and join their forum. Great people. On Apr-06-12 at 05:28:49 PDT, seller added the following information: Ok, just to answer a few of the most common questions I've been getting. All 4 wheels are original factory Fuchs. They are NOT aftermarket reproductions. The tires are almost new and have tons of tread left on them. The original collapsible spare tire is still in the trunk. After counting, I've received 16 emails asking what I would take for the car right now to end the auction. NADA lists an '84 911 Cabrio from $21,500 low retail up to $33,700 high retail. In my opinion, that's too much for this car. However, I've turned down quite a few offers in the low to mid teens. In order for me to end the auction early, the buyer would have to pay a premium. If you're serious about a "BuyItNow" question, then send your question with a serious offer. Otherwise I'm happy to let the auction play out and someone may get a fantastic deal (although judging by the offers I've received it's not going to be a steal). Good luck bidding, everyone! On Apr-06-12 at 05:35:16 PDT, seller added the following information: Oh, and the Viper is a 94 R/T, the car next to it is a 1995 Lamborghini Diablo VT. No, they aren't included in the sale :) and yes, I will take you for a quick ride if you come to pick up the Porsche. The Hershey, PA Porsche event is April 21st. I would be happy to store the car for you until then, but payment must still be made within 7 days of auction end. On Apr-06-12 at 05:51:16 PDT, seller added the following information: Sorry about the multiple revisions, but I also feel that I need to address the AutoCheck score and record. As I stated before, there was a brief period where the speedo was repaired and the previous owners said that it was inoperative for about 2 months where they put 800-1200 miles on the car. Every year after that when they renewed the registration, they checked the "Odometer discrepancy/ Not actual mileage" box on the registration form so there's a hit on the title/odometer record every year after the repair, which brings the score down so low. Also, you'll notice some wild odometer numbers in the early-mid 90's during emissions inspection reports. You'll also notice that these are VERY round numbers (35,000, 90,000, etc). In the early history of AutoCheck/Carfax I don't think people/repair shops had any idea of how much damage they were doing to a car's history by making up a number rather than taking 30 seconds to check and record the actual number. In my opinion, vehicle history reports are great for newer cars, but until there's a standard put in place where reporting is consistent, it's worthless on a classic or antique car.
