Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSI. (E9) I found this car for my brother (second owner) in 1996 and it was purchased from the owner through a classic foreign car business in Darien, CT. The car was formerly owned by a doctor and was shipped to the U.S. from Italy. When I found the car, it was in original condition and needed minor mechanical and cosmetic repairs. The repairs were made (have all receipts, work done mostly by Rennsport in Bedford, NY) and the car was driven for 4 years, always garaged and properly maintained. In 2000, a partial restoration was performed consisting of the following: 1. New Paint2. New Interior (Leather Seats, Headliner, Carpets ~ $8K)3. Refinish Wheels with New Tires4. New Audio System All work was done by BMW specialists in CT. I purchased the car from my brother in 2006 and have kept it garaged and maintained since. The car has always received anything it needed. It is mechanically solid and has always been reliable. I have all receipts for work done since 1996. The car drives beautifully, with no rattles or other sounds. The suspension is tight and the engine has plenty of power, especially with the additional horsepower of the CSI version. All lights are functional and all power windows work, although a bit slow. Unfortunately, when originally delivered to the BMW factory for assembly, the Karmann E9 bodies sat outside, sometimes for long periods of time. Subsequently, these cars can rust easily and mine is no exception. As you will see in the photos, the floors need to be replaced (frame rails are solid) as do the front fenders. The inner front wheel wells/ shock towers need to be repaired and there is a small rust spot on the driver's side door. The rear shock towers and spare tire well are in good shape; one of the shock towers was rebuilt in 2005. The rear quarter panels, passenger side door are also in good shape. The rocker panels appear solid. In the interest of accurately describing this car, I have had several BMW specialists look at this car. The general assessment is that it is a solid car which needs to have the rust repairs done now, to preserve the value. Keith Martin of Sports Car Market magazine estimates the value of the less-desirable CS coupes at $9,300. ("low" value" listed in 2012 Pocket Price Guide) My car is being priced accordingly, considering the work which needs to be done. It is not easy to part with this car as it has been in my family for 15 years. I am at a crossroads and either need to have the repairs done or buy something else, which is my choice especially due to the fact that I have 4 kids and would like to be able to take them all at one time. Shipping will be at bidder's expense but I am happy to help coordinate. I am available to answer any questions - please do not hesitate to ask.
