Vehicle Detail

1985 MERCEDES 300SD TURBO DIESEL SEDAN. LONG-BODY STYLE (THE "126"). The photos here were taken within a month before the listing. OVERVIEW I love driving this car, and hate to sell it. This is an old man's (me) car at a young man's price. I had intended to restore it, but now have to pay bills instead. This is a perfect car for someone who needs high-end reliability and style, but doesn't have the finances needed for a new car. The engine, transmission, brakes and entire drive-line are in solid condition, and the car is a definite candidate for full restoration. ODOMETER/GAS MILEAGE The car has 287,595 miles. The engines on these 300SDs typically go 500K miles, and this one is going strong. It gets 30/24 mpg. BODY There is absolutely no rust on this car, as it has spent almost its entire life in the southern US. This is a re-built car, and has been re-painted Medium Blue (prior to my ownership) and has spots of overspray. The interior is the medium grey leather with lighter grey leather perforated inserts, and wood trim. The carpet is in great shape, but the wood trim is getting old. There are a few small door nicks (see photos). ENGINE The engine is strong and solid, no leaks that I know about. The turbo functions as it should (kicks in as soon as you step on the accelerator) and the transmission shifts as is typical with these classic Mercedes - with solid, crisp and distinct shifts between gears - no slipping. The car starts right up, even though the glow plug light doesn't come on. The radiator functions as it should, and oil pressure is strong as evidenced by the properly functioning oil pressure gauge. There are no leaks underneath even when parked for extended periods. TIRES, BATTERY, FEATURES The tires have 60% tread, and I've installed a brand new heavy-duty battery that has a three-year warranty. Power sunroof, factory radio, power seats, power door locks all work, though I've unplugged the radio fuse and sunroof fuse because of a small electrical leak. The automatic locks are not working, because of a leak on the vacuum system that drives it. All other vacuum system items (such as engine shut-off) function properly. Blower motor/vents for interior heating and ventilation function ok, as well as the functioning a/c. The cruise control feature works. WHAT NEEDS WORK Since I removed the fuse, the radio and power antenna do not function because of the small electrical leak. The upper dash has some visible cracking, and the wood trim is not perfect. I recently found some wood trim replacement, and will include them with the car. Although the automatic seat controls on both front seats work fine, the Power Window switches are temperamental. This is because of a slight vacuum leak, that can be easily tracked down. The vacuum pump works perfectly. While the speedometer and the interment panel gauge work fine, the odometer recently ceased working (my estimate is that I've put two thousand miles on since then). One of the Front Fog light bulbs need replacing. The front windows are not tinted (in many states it is the law), and the rear window has some tint-delaminating. SUMMARY Overall, I could nit-pick minor details, but everything is reasonable considering year and mileage. This is a mechanically solid car with most features functioning as they should. DISCLAIMER I reserve the right to end this listing at any time, and I won't take any price less than the already low reserve.
