Vehicle Detail
1968 TR 250 dry California Black Plate car 1968 Triumph TR-250 History: Original California "Black-Plate" classic Triumph in excellent condition. This was owned by a Doctor in the Napa Valley area. He had quite a large collection of classics back in the eighties, but got too old to be driving them all, so had parked this in a large storage building back in 1985. A friend of mine knew the Doctor and was able to buy the TR 250 recently, but found that the motor would not turn over. He offered the car to me at that point. When I bought the car it was dusty, but in remarkable condition, with only 83,000 miles on it -and needing only to given TLC and som hours of loving care to make it road-ready again. Condition: Original white, with a four-speed (non-overdrive) and has the original steel wheels -though the hubcaps did not come with the car? It has the factory AM Pushbutton radio and metal covered speaker, that works great. Original keys, locks match, owners manual in glvoe box. The california sun has caused cracking on the dash and some of the other padded parts. I bought a new padded control panel bracket, but have not installed it yet. It also comes with a tonnueau cover, and complete jack, owners manual, Vintage Triumph Registry enamel badge, and a work manual and "race tuning" manual -all for the TR 250. The top has the original TR250 reflective diagonal design on it as shown in the drivers hand book. It is in very good shape, although the back window could be a little clearer. It does not have a "boot" cover to cover the top when it is down. But, they are available from Moss Motors. This car starts right up, runs awsome, has that great Triumph six-cylinder "throaty-rumble" sound that is so awesome! All the lights work, blinkers, horn, wipers, heater (a bit wimpy, though), gauges, etc.. etc. I can't think of anything that does not work, but there is probably something I am overlooking -as this car is over 40 years old! Things to do: As you can see, it has a tonneau cover, but lacks a "boot" to cover the top when folded down. I did find a "brake"warning light to fill the small empty hole on the dash, but it was not here in time for my pictures. Also, I am having new carpets made for each side to go under the driver and passenger's feet. Originally the car had black floor matts up front, which had crumbled from age. I bought new rubber matts as shown, but will add carpeting here for a more plush feel, and for additional sound deadening. Mechanically, I can't think of anything it needs, except a dash light behind the amp gauge, the low speed on the 2-speed fan doesn't work, but high does, Other?? I am probably missing something? Technical Stuff: I don't want to make this too long, but this paragraph details body condition, paint, new parts, etc. The paint is in very good shape, with no dents, and only a few rock chips. It was done before 1985, though, and was not done to "show car" specs by any means. However, I have buffed and waxed it and added the TR 250 stripe in the original dimensions -and it looks very sharp! As for prior dents or body work, the only thing I could find was a seam in the floor pan -possibly from replacing a rear panel some time back in it's early life (see photos). I could find no other dents or signs of repair. The frame is clean and shows no signs of any repair work. Underneath, the only rust I could find was light surface rust where road sand had worn the leading edges off in a few places. I have sprayed those spots with chemical converters, primed, and re-sprayed in the original chassis black. Partial list of new parts: Radiator, P195-65 tires, Brake Master Cylinder, rear brake lines, cylinders, Clutch master cylinder, slave, carbs rebuilt, tuned, new plugs, points, oil & other fluids, gas lines and tank drained and purged, new rubber hoses, gaskets, and anything else I could find that needed to be spruced up to make it dependable and road-worthy. Oh, and the original motor had surface rust in one of the cylinders, so it would not turn over. I replaced it with an eary TR6 long bock that had been rebuilt. It runs relly great and has 160-165 lbs of compression in each cylinder. I was just going to run that while I rebuilt the original block, but now it's a year later and I have not done that yet. The original block has the correct serial number and does come with the car for future use. I did install all of the original TR250 accessories (distrib, carbs, etc..) for originality. This is one great car that is as much fun to look at as it is to drive! Pictures: I have listed a bunch of pictures, including the motor compartment while cleaning and changing blocks, the interior with seats and carpet out to remove transmission and put in a new seal to stop a trans. oil leak, underneath shots, and more. If you follow my link to Picassa Web you can see more pictures including the car as found in storage a year ago. https://picasaweb.google.com/tradin.shells/TR250FinalPics# Also, here are YouTube links for a complete "walk-around" and to hear the motor run: http://wwwVjLM0-RTgIk.youtube.com/watch?v= walkaround view http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leQuMBNhCmA motor running http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV7f8DXFNec motor & trunk view QUESTIONS?? Please contact me with quetions BEFORE you bid!!! I will promptly answer all questions. Also, if you want to talk to the mechanics who have done a lot of the work on this car (that was beyond my ability --final tune-up, adjust and balance the carbs, brake work, etc...) please feel free to call Rex or Tom at Mini-Motors in Salem, Oregon. They are really sharp at early British stuff, and both are able to answer most any question you might have about it's condition. Best to catch them between 3-5 pm PST at 503-362-3187. Please, only bid if you are serious and have your financing already in place!! (Clean/Clear California Title) Questions? email or call Doug at 503-689-6070 Thanks, and happy bidding!! On Nov-24-11 at 19:21:47 PST, seller added the following information: BIDDING UPDATE: Thank-you for your positive show of support for this car. I was not sure how running this through the Holidays would work, so had my reserve set at the level I thought best in case there was not much interest this week. But seeing strong support up to this point, I am lowering the reserve now. CAUTION: Do NOT Bid on this if you are not serious about buying this car! Your bid is a contract. The reserve WILL be met very soon. Also, I was able to win a bid on an original style convertible top "boot" (the cover that goes over the top when it's put down). It has the original white piping -so should add to the authentic period-correct originality of this car. It will be included with the other parts placed in the trunk. Happy Bidding! --Doug
