Originally introduced in 1951 at the Frankfurt Show, the 300 Series was very much a flagship designed to promote the Stuttgart manufacturer as a producer of the finest luxury cars. The Mercedes Benz Type 300 were the company's largest and most prestigious models throughout the 1950's. The 300S (the W188 --chassis number) was the company's top end vehicle on it's introduction at the Paris Salon in October 1951. The 300S Roadster was particularily rare, with only 141 produced between 1952 and 1955. The largely hand built W188 was marketed as one of the top luxury cars in the world. The S model was improved from the prior models, including a big increase in horsepower that raised the horsepower up to 150. Top speed was 110 mph. The curvy body is accented by graceful fender lines. The interior is adorned in leather, and the dash with walnut trim and chrome instruments. In it's day, the price tag for this car was $12,500, which was significantly above the average car cost of $1000. Reportedly, Gary Cooper and Cary Grant were proud owners of this luxury car. This car is in need of a restoration, but certainly a great investment due to it's rarity and popularity.
