Vehicle Detail
1958 Pontiac Star Chief 2 Door I purchased this 1958 Pontiac Star Chief 2 Door from the gentleman that brought her to Michigan from Arkansas in 2005. It was the subject of a cosmetic restoration prior to his purchase. This Star Chief had little use during this gentleman’s ownership. It has been stored inside. I purchased it earlier this year and have used it as an occasional driver and to attend a handful of car shows. The southern history of this Pontiac shows in her condition. The rockers, quarter panels, doors, fenders, hood, trunk are sound. There are a few small spots of rust, the size of water drops, located above the driver’s side trim that have not broken through the paint. There is a rust spot on the passenger side quarter panel that looks like a crack. The frame, under carriage, and the wheel wells were undercoated at some point in this Pontiac’s history. The paint is tired and has many small imperfections. The paint looks OK when parked in a lot full of modern cars or alone; the Star Chief look like a grand old classic. When parked among restored peers at a car show, the paint looks faded and scratchy. There is a cloudy spot on the front of the hood about the size of a hand that I cannot get to show in a photograph. Finally there are a few places where the paint has blistered. All of the hard to find trim, emblems, stainless steel, and chrome are still on this Star Chief. The bumpers, trim, and emblems are in good condition, but faded. Die cast parts like the vent window frames, side view mirror, C-pillar trim, and interior chrome have some pitting. This Pontiac is equipped with a 370 V8, column shift automatic, Saginaw Safety power steering, and an AM radio. Period accessories include the Continental kit, fender skirts, and dual rear mounted antenna. The Continental kit appears to be the one from the GM published 1958 Pontiac Accessories brochure. An aftermarket Sony stereo was added by the prior owner. As shared above I have driven this Pontiac locally and to car shows. The clock does not work. The shift indicator needle always displays Park. The steering wheel has a crack in it at the hub and as a result of this crack; the horn ring does not work. I have not figured out how to get the windshield wipers to work, there appears to be a vacuum leak or lack of vacuum. The original AM radio is in place, but has been disconnected in favor of the aftermarket Sony stereo. The fuel gage works intermittently. The other gages (speedometer, odometer, generator, temperature, oil pressure) work. The speedometer needle does have some bounce. I have recentlly replaced the tires including the spare mounted in the Continental kit (white wall radials). I have also had the brakes inspected and the master cylinder replaced. The mileage indicated by the odometer is currently 18,477. I believe the actual mileage to be 118,477. The engine runs; the transmission shifts as it should. I was told by the prior owner that the engine and transmission have not been rebuilt. An original owners guide, Pontiac accessories brochure, and shop manuals are included. The 1958 Pontiac on the cover of the owners guide looks just like this Star Chief …. two tone: red and white. The Pontiac has a clear Michigan title and current registration. Inspection can be arranged by appointment week day evenings or weekends. Please ask your questions through eBay. Payment is expected within 7 days; electronic transfer or certified bank check by US Postal Service Priority Mail is acceptable. Title will be given to (or sent to the new owner by US Postal Service Priority Mail) as soon as the deposit of your payment is confirmed. The Pontiac can be picked up any time after your payment is confirmed. Arrangement and cost of shipping the Star Chief is the responsibility of the new owner. I reserve the right to end the auction early. Even though I did not have a for sale sign in the car, I had several people express interest in this Pontiac at the last car show she was displayed at. Thank you.
