Vehicle Detail
1960 Triumph TR3a – com #TS74713LO. Car has been in my family since new (originally purchased by my grandfather), comes with clear title. As the VIN number indicates car was spec’d with the rare overdrive transmission, adjustable steering column, wire wheels, and leather interior (since replaced by vinyl); color scheme in pictures is as original. Extensive catalog of photos of the car can be found here. Previously restored ca. 25-30 years ago including engine/transmission rebuild (~ 35,000 miles on each), bodywork, frame stripped and repainted. This would make an excellent donor car, in particular someone looking to upgrade to an overdrive transmission. Car was driven into garage for dis-assembly in preparation for new restoration; it soon became apparent that it required more time, money, and skill to complete the job than I could muster. The Good: As a whole this car is very complete - please see link to additional photos for full documentation. Mechanically the car was in very good running condition prior to dis-assembly; overdrive was fully functional. Although no longer in running condition, engine, transmission, differential all move freely. Engine has been treated with fogging oil. Notables include heater, complete working gauge/switch set (including hard to find original working temp gauge), side-curtains, convertible top/frame, largely complete tool roll (including jack), and original owner’s manual. Comes with wire wheels in varying condition mounted with 4 Michelin XZX 165SR15 tires in great shape. Spare tire (also on wire wheel) is a 155SR15 XZX that holds air… The Bad: Structurally the car is not solid – it is exactly what would be expected for a car driven year-round in the upper Midwest for a good part of its life. Tub is shot; frame is straight but needs work. Body panels are a mixed bag: bonnet, front apron, spare tire lid, and boot lid are in great shape. Front wings possibly salvageable, but would require lots of work. Doors and rear wings IMO are junk. Sills are not included – they were trashed. Convertible top included – stitching is falling apart on one side and windows are yellowed. Driver’s side seat frame has some repairable cracks. The Ugly: As noted above – the car is largely disassembled. I have re-attached the body panels and engine components to facilitate transport. All other parts are bagged according to component group, labeled, and boxed. More importantly – during the original restoration the VIN plates were removed. Upon receiving the car I put them in the house for safekeeping – and now cannot find them. I will keep looking and update the ad if they turn up, but for now the car is being sold as if they are not present.Extras: The car comes with quite a few extras acquired through the years, including two extra fuel pumps, an extra ignition coil, voltage regulator, full set of engine gaskets (including head gasket), full set of carb gaskets, master cylinder rebuild kit, wheel bearings, various fasteners, plugs, and more. I have tried to document the vehicle as completely as possible. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have additional questions. On Oct-11-11 at 11:39:50 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE/CLARIFICATION: Given some questions from possible bidders I just wanted to provide a little more clarity to the description and to make sure that people are bidding with full information. Although the description above is accurate, the pictures make the car look better than it actually is. I want to reiterate the observation made above that in my (admittedly inexpert) opinion, this car is probably better suited for parts than as a ground-up restoration project. Very little of the structure (except the specifics noted below) is solid. Many of the structural elements (inner front fenders, rear boot floor/inner fenders) were extensively corroded and have been patched and repaired (often with fiberglass). As a result they look more solid than they actually are. On Oct-12-11 at 04:54:07 PDT, seller added the following information: Car is located in Decorah, Iowa (52101). On Oct-12-11 at 06:36:34 PDT, seller added the following information: Two auto transport companies are listed in the Decorah area. I have no connection to either, and also no prior experience with or knowledge of them. Alpine Transport Inc - located in Decorah Premier Transportation - located in Ft. Atkinson (only about 15 miles away).
