I thought no problem, my dad likes to work on cars and it won’t be long till this car is on the road. Well, 26 years and four kids later, I’m throwing up my hands and passing this one on. The sad part, for me, is the hard part is done. The rusted floor pans and battery box were removed and replaced with remanufactured pans from Stoddard. I welded these in place myself circa 1986. It was painted red when I got it. Again around 1986, I sanded down the entire car and repainted it the original white with several coats of lacquer. There are a few nicks and chips from several years in the garage, but it is generally rust free. Underneath the bare metal floor pans have been primed only with no undercoating applied. I purchased a full car rubber trim kit from Stoddard and used that to reassemble the exterior chrome, trim, bumpers, etc. The tires were new in 1986. They hold air, but are a little creased from lying flat for several years. The engine was completely overhauled and rebuilt in 1986. I installed new rings, bearings, pushrods, pushrod tubes, clutch, pressure plate, etc. Basically anything that could be replaced was. The carburetors (Zenith 32NDIX) were rebuilt 20 years ago and still function fine. The distributer was new. The generator was new. A new headliner was installed and great original door panels installed with all new hardware. It was 90% restored by about 1990 and garage-kept ever since. Most recently, with teenagers of driving age and a little more cash in my pocket, I have blown off the cobwebs and hired someone to install that carpet kit that I bought from Stoddard years ago. The seats still need a new cover and the driver’s seat leans back to the right because some part of the metal frame is broken. The dashboard is in good shape, the gauges work aside from a quirky fuel gauge hiccup every now and then. It does not have a radio, but it does have the original foglight switch. The brake light, reverse light and flasher is not functioning. I cleaned out the gas tank, put new gaskets in the fuel cock, honed and re-built all four brake cylinders, no easy task. I installed new transaxle boots and the throttle linkage has a few new pieces to make it function like it should. James Cox of Cox Motorsports in Kansas City has rebuilt the front end to take out the shimmy. It starts and runs pretty good now, except… there’s a bit of a howling noise coming from the gearbox when the clutch is released and engine is under load. Since I am no gearbox mechanic, James Cox is moving to Atlanta, and my money, time and patience has finally run out, I am reluctantly giving this car up for adoption. This is a complete car! If you have ever wanted an old Porsche but didn’t want to spend concours quality money, this is your car. It would make a great daily driver in the hands of the right individual and I would really like to see it go to a good home.
