This 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SL, being the last year of 450SL production has the most robust engine of the entire R107 line. First years of R107 SL production with manual valve adjustments (and prone to cam wear, no less) as well as maintenance intensive ignition points and 1st generation Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) developed into the 1976-80 4.5 liter engine with hydraulic valve adjusters, breakerless ignition, and Constant Injection System (CIS). This super durable engine combination was too good to be true, and in in 1981 developed into the all-aluminum 380SL engine. This effort to cut weight/improve fuel economy also included the single row timing chain of the first several years of 380SL production, the unreliability of which prompted a recall and retrofit program. This example on auction here is a well cared for late production 450SL with a low 96,670 miles. The Metallic Silver / Black color combination is thought by many to be the most pleasing to the eye, as it was also the colors of the Silver Arrow Mercedes-Benz racing cars in the past. This car definitely carries on some traditional Mercedes-Benz qualities: complete lack of cabin shake even on rough pavement, super solid door closure (see "bank-vault" comparisons), top of the line road holding, as well as precise engine and transmission parameters. The car is fitted with a relatively new set of Goodyear tires, with approximately 90% tread. The car drives straight with no pulling to either side, or rattles whatsoever. Please note: the factory alloy wheels have been chromed, and while still presentable, there is the start of peeling on each of the four rims (see photos). Other chrome such as the bumpers, grille etc are in excellent plus condition. All lights /signals / horns operate properly. Paint condition is a 8 to 9 on a scale of 10, with lots of gloss and a fresh coat of wax. There are several small scrapes and chips throughout the car as well as a number of small imperfections on several panels, hardly noticeable. Engine condition in this car excels, as it should with a low 96,600 miles. The car starts up properly hot or cold, idles smoothly, and accelerates strongly. We love the engine and it's power delivery, and we know the next owner will also. The transmission shifts strongly through the gears, right on time. The car is equipped with it's original removable hardtop, as well as a black soft top. The German black canvas top is in very good to excellent condition. The rear plexi window is also still in very good condition, with a few marks from storage in the folded position. The hard top goes on and off easily, with excellent condition headliner and heated rear glass. Please note there is one scrape mark on the upper panel, several inches long, possibly from storage. We tested the Automatic Climate Control (ACC) system. When tested, the car produced the proper volume and temperature of warm air for heat and defrost, as well as nice cold air from the A/C system. This in itself is cause for celebration, and a testament to this particular car's good service history. Anyone who has experience with this system knows that the ease of it's operation comes at a cost intensive price.The interior looks and feels great. The seats are VERY supportive, and are in excellent condition. The wood trim used in the dash area is in almost perfect condition. Other interior fittings (carpets, trim etc) are in great shape (see photos). There is a car alarm installed, with a lock // unlock function which eases daily operation. All of the original books and manuals. All in all, this last year 450 SL is absolute fun to drive, and evokes lots of positive comment. The build quality really comes through, and, as with all Mercedes-Benz products, any part is readily available, as well as technical support.
