Vehicle Detail

I have for sale a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 with a 4.0 liter SOHC V6 engine with only 75378 miles. The transmission needs repair (no reverse). I bought this vehicle about two years ago, driving it daily for about a year when it developed engine problems. It was determined that the timing chains had failed and I had them replaced. The timing chain in this engine requires a complete removal to replace because of the overhead cams (front and back sets). The bill came in just under $2500. About two or three months after the engine repair, the reverse gear of the transmission failed. Research on the vehicle indicates that these two issues are prevalent with this model year. The Explorer has been parked in my garage since then, while I decided what to do next. Including the purchase price I have about $7000 in this vehicle and I decided enough is enough. It's likely that the transmission repair is the last big ticket item left, but I've decide to cut my losses. I have all receipts and a Carfax report that listed no previous problems with this vehicle...just my dumb luck I guess. In addition to the transmission problem the heater control box has a stripped out receiving socket for the control motor, so the heat can only be controlled by turning it off or on. Because of this I can't determine if the AC works, I suspect it doesn't. The gas guage is malfunctioning (always reads full), and the radio will only work if a CD is loaded (weird, but it works). I have installed a new battery, new spark plugs and wires (first attempt to fix engine problem), a new heater box control motor (an attempt to fix the heater), and five brand new Michelin tires along with miscellaneous items. The inner liner of the front left fender has been repaired with zip ties, a brake line replaced, and a wheel replaced due to the left front tire blowing and shredding on the highway. Cosmetically, the exterior and interior are in very good shape, no rust or dents. There are some very minor scratches (no rust), and a ding in the right side rear door trim. I am selling this AS IS and WHERE IS, it will be the buyer's responsibility to pick it up. A $200 deposit within 3 days is required with the balance of the winning bid and vehicle picked up within 7 days. I encourage you to ask questions. I will do my best to answer them promptly and honestly. Thank you for looking, and happy bidding.
