Vehicle Detail
This 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier has an interesting history. My unmarried sister-in-law bought it new in 2001 and drove it until her untimely death in 2010. She took very good care of it and had all of the maintenance performed as scheduled. Unfortunately, she lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan where it was exposed to salt so there is some rust through on the right rear quarter panel. This car was literally only driven to school and church for most of its life, hence, the low miles. The car is a 5 speed manual with the 2.2 litre four cylinder engine. After my sister-in-law died unexpectedly last year I let my 17 year old son drive the car. That was probably not the smartest thing I ever did. Last week, while a passenger was getting into the car he backed into some kind of embankment and bent the passenger door. Now it will neither close nor open properly. The body shop says that the door needs to be replaced. That might be right. The estimate for all of the repairs is $814. I think a good body guy could probably hammer out the bent portions but I am no expert so it may indeed need to have the passenger door replaced. The right way to go might be to locate a matching door in a salvage yard. Other than the matters mentioned above, I am aware of two other issues with the car. First neither the remote release nor the key will open the trunk. You have to fold down the back seat and release the latch from the inside. This is a $200 plastic part that I was too cheap to have replaced. The second problem is with the control arm for the left outside rearview mirror. It doesn’t work very well so you have to adjust the mirror manually. There are some other scrapes and dings that a near-sighted school teacher and a first year driver added but not too inconsistent with a ten year old car. Other than that, the car runs very well. The interior is nice. The air conditioning works great. The five speed shifts smoothly and the gas mileage is wonderful, This would be a great car for a teenage driver or as a winter beater to save on the good car. I would fix it myself but I just don’t have the bucks right now. Please feel free to come inspect the car. It is in Columbia, Missouri. Email me for details. Obviously the car is sold as is. The body damage is not nearly severe enough to impair the status of the title. I need a deposit within 48 hours of the auction close via Paypal (or at close if Buy It Now) is used) and the balance within an additional 72 hours. I would like the car moved as soon as possible as it makes an extremely poor lawn ornament.
