Vehicle Detail
This is a very rare very early Lotus Europa (or Europe as some of the early advertising stated). This Lotus type 46 Series 1A has quite a few differences than the later types, the most noticeable of which is a much prettier, lower nose and headlamps. Series 1 Europa's where not sold in the USA or England except by specialty importer and considering this fact and the low production numbers they are quite rare today. This car is in very good and very original condition. It runs and drives great and is currently licensed. The original mileage showing is only about 30,000 and I believe this to be accurate. The body and paint presents quite well although there are a few touch ups and blemishes. No evidence of accident damage or repairs and no rust. It does have a few of the usual lotus stress cracks the worst of which are on the nose (see pic). The windscreen is in good condition with only a few very tiny chips. It still has its original plastic side windows that pop out and drop into slots inside the doors, These windows are in good condition. The side quarter windows are also plastic and are a little fogged from age and the passenger side has a couple of small cracks. The original rear Lancia Carello taillights are in great condition. The chassis has no rust (other than mild surface rust) or problems at all. The Bumpers both front and rear are in good condition with just a little pitting and some minor scratches. It has its original sebring mirrors although one has bad glass (silvering coming off) and the other the chrome is fairly dull. The original wheels are in great condition and it does have a good spare with jack and tools. The Dunlop sp Aquajet 155 SR13 tyres are in good shape. The doors open and close nice with their series 1 specific push button release. The doors do not sag at all (a common problem with europas). Mechanically this car is in excellent condition. It still retains its original Lotus tuned Renault 1470cc engine and 4 speed gearbox. It runs great, has terrific oil pressure and no cooling problems. The brakes work perfect. The clutch works great and it shifts into all gears without problems. The shift linkage is nice and tight. The Electrics all work including the single wiper and horn. The car is not leaking any fluids at all that i have seen (it's been parked on a nice clean floor and left no spots). The Interior is in fair condition overall. The seats are nice except the bottom cushion on the passengers side has a few small holes. The wood dash is decent with the typical cracks in the lacquer finish. All the instruments work but the tach and the ammeter bounce around a bit. there are two panels cut out one on each side door sill where I suspect someone wanted to gain access to install, repair or modify the seatbelt anchor points. The holes are covered with metal panels riveted in place and painted black. It does have seatbelts, The one on the drivers side has a shoulder and lap belt and is a lotus type. The passenger side has a BMC (british motor corp.) lap belt. It has floor carpets only in good shape. The dash pad is in great shape. This Europa does come with a clear title. This car is in overall very nice condition especially when considering its age and originality.
