Vehicle Detail
Flash back to the early aughts, when we bought this car from its sole previous owner at 60k miles to go on our daily almost exclusively highway commute to a job we had acquired. Flash forward a number of years later, when we ditched the gray cubicle rat race to work from home and this car became a 2nd vehicle to just tool around town when needed and rack up a mere 1,000 or so miles per year. And now that brings us to today, when certain other circumstances that you would surely care nothing about has resulted in us not even needing a 2nd car WHICH BRINGS US TO: For sale: 1998 Jetta GLX with the desirable VR6 2.8L engine, ready for a little TLC to become a reliable daily driver or a fantastic base for a project car to get your Vin Diesel on and implement all the modifications these 6 cylinder watercooled VWs are known for. Two owner vehicle, the last 40,000 miles were mostly highway miles. Many of the PITA things that go wrong with this car have been taken care of and replaced, and there are 5,000 miles or less on these items: BatteryTiresWater PumpBeltsIgnition Coil Pack Ignition SwitchSpark Plug WiresThat said, there are some issues we have not gotten around to fixing. Known OEM codes currently indicate that there is a "P0455 EVAP system small leak," and the left front ABS sensor is bad. The backup lights switch also likely needs replacing, the glove box latch is broken (just the handle, the box stays closed), and there are issues with the window switches (likely broken wires in the boot, several do go down using the key). Cosmetically, there's wear and tear on the driver's seat, a broken side skirt, and a rust bubble on the trunk. Other dings/scratches would be considered average for a car of this age/mileage. This Jetta starts without fail, runs decent (probably could greatly benefit from a basic tuneup), and has a lot of miles left in her for the right owner. But as we are a doctor, not a mechanic (and actually, we're not even a doctor), this car is being sold AS IS. Since they just released that "Atlas Shrugged" movie, let's let Ayn Rand and the free market reign and start things off at $1 with no reserve. Happy bidding! On Apr-18-11 at 08:14:24 PDT, seller added the following information: Winner of this auction will also receive a copy of the Bentley service manual for this car, along with a copy of the "Water-Cooled Volkswagen Performance Handbook" to help you get this baby back into tip top shape in no time.On Apr-20-11 at 12:57:28 PDT, seller added the following information: We've received a few emails from people asking if this Jetta is ready to hop into and drive off to far-flung lands, so we thought we should add a note about that. We went on a lot of road trips as kids, and our dad was the type that had his little vehicle checklist he went through before he would even think of backing out of the driveway -- check the oil, the tire pressure, make sure all regular maintenance had been performed, the engine running properly, etc. And if he were alive today and we told him we were about ready to make a several hundred mile commute in a car we had never driven before, that we had not had checked out by a mechanic, had over 100k miles on it, and whose owner we were buying it from was openly admitting that the car was throwing fault codes, he would smack us upside the head to knock some sense into it. Now, as we said in the listing, it starts every time, doesn't stall out and has never left us stranded anywhere, but it has lived its current life as a backup vehicle and has not been called to duty to make a one way trip of longer than 30-40 miles since at least 2007, so the inner dad voice inside our head needs to tell you that if you do want to immediately take this car on an interstate cruise, IT'S AT YOUR OWN RISK.
