Vehicle Detail

1969 Mercury Cougar. I am listing this vehicle as an excellent restoration candidate as it has never been wrecked, raced, or otherwise butchered like so many others that are offered. It is NOT a daily driver; it is a 42 year old vehicle that has never been restored and shows the expected wear. It would be a great starting point for a restoration or building an Eliminator clone. This car has never been in an accident, and I believe all of the sheet metal is original; the quarter panels and fender aprons/radiator support are original. I purchased this vehicle from the second owner. This is a southwest Cougar that recently spent several years in a storage unit in Texas. This is an early production Cougar with a serial number in the 600s. The odometer shows 49,715 miles which I believe is 149,715 miles. 03/03/11: Several ebay members are asking if they can purchase the car and drive it home to another city or state. I do not recommend this as this vehicle was in storage for several years should be gone over before any road trips. If you are looking for a vehicle you can buy and drive home, please do not bid on this auction. 03/05/11: I have received inquires regarding the stamping on the body panels. I have added additional photos on the Photobucket site listed below. Currently 88 "watchers." Mechanical: Engine: The 351 Windsor engine runs and sounds good, but the carburetor probably needs rebuilding as the car hesitates if the accelerator pedal is pushed too quickly. The intake manifold was replaced with a 4 barrel aftermarket unit at some point, and the original 2V carburetor replaced with a 4 barrel Holley 1850. The distributor was replaced with an electronic ignition unit. The air conditioning compressor has been removed. I do not have any of the original A/C hardware. The part number on the block is C90E-6015-A with date code 8E10 (May 10, 1968). Transmission: The FMX transmission shifts through all 3 gears fine, but years of sitting have resulted in a significant leak from the tail shaft when the car is parked after a few days. I recently changed the filter, fluid (which was clear and clean) and pan gasket. I don’t see an ID tag on the case. Differential: Looks like the original 9 inch open unit that came with the car (see below), but I don’t see an ID tag on it. Brakes: Front disc/rear drum. Work fine including booster. Calipers were recently replaced. Discs are scored. Exterior: Paint: This is an original two-tone vehicle (see ID tag information below). I believe this has had just one respray, but years in the Southwest sun have faded the paint beyond the ability to buff it out. There are various chips and scratches. Definitely looks better in the photos than in person, but it’s still decent. The panels are straight. Rust: The car has very minor cosmetic rust in the common areas of cars of this era - the front edge of the doors, near the rear edge of the rear wheel wells, and one spot on the left side inner fender apron near the rear of the shock tower. The door frames and edges are solid; the skin corners were been patched with fiberglass, but steel could be stitched in if wanted. The frame and floors are solid. Wheels/tires: 14 x 7 Magnum 500s with B.F. Goodrich 245/60R14 tires. The tires that came with the rims and are too wide for the front and will rub if the steering wheel is turned too far. The front bumper is clean and straight. The rear bumper is straight but some areas of the chrome show age. The headlight doors open and close as they should. They stay closed for a few days after the car is shut off before they slowly start to open. The sequential lights don’t function as they should – the inner two lights on each side flash. The vehicle has the original blinker relay box. Interior: Carpet is original and tired. The seat vinyl is intact; not torn. The front seats were replaced with 1970 Cougar high back seats at some point. The dashboard has a large split in the middle from the desert sun. Headliner is good; the “sail panels” near the rear window have been covered in vinyl. All 4 windows roll up and down. The radio has been replaced with an aftermarket unit, but it doesn’t look like the opening was butchered. I do not have the original radio. The blower motor does not work; I’m not sure if it’s a fuse or a bad motor. VIN/Data Plate information is as follows: Engine = 351 2V Windsor Body = 65A, standard hardtop Color = PM, two-tone Medium Blue/White top Trim = 1B, Light Corinthian Blue, all vinyl Date Code = 27H, August 27, 1969 District Sales Office = 26, Memphis, TN Axle = 2, 2.75 non-Locking Transmission = X, FMX automatic Assembled at Ford’s Dearborn plant View more photos and a video of the engine running at: http://s1114.photobucket.com/albums/k532/hanworth/1969%20Cougar/ and select “Slideshow.” This vehicle is being sold “as is” without any warranty. Please ask any questions prior to the auction ending to avoid any misunderstandings. This vehicle is not in a condition to drive long distances; therefore, I am recommending the purchaser plan on shipping the vehicle unless they live in the Southern California area.
