Vehicle Detail
1977 Mercedes-Benz 280CE European spec. 4spd. For your consideration today is a 1977 Mercedes-Benz 280CE. Finished in Astral Silver over Palomino leather, this example is a rare European specification model equipped with a four speed manual gearbox. With 166,295 kilometers (103,330 miles), this example has very low mileage for its age and is in nice ‘driver’ condition throughout. The paintwork is an older respray that shows well with some minor flaws and an equally nice and original interior. Mechanically, the M110 inline six is healthy, with excellent hot and cold oil pressure, the gearbox is in fine condition with all synchros operating smoothly, the brakes pull the car down cleanly with no vibrations or other issues to note and the suspension is tight and free of any untoward noises or other issues. I purchased the car out of Florida and had a major “E” service performed on it, as well as a few other minor needs sorted out. I have been using it as a daily driver (weather permitting) for the past year or so. My original intent was to create a replica of the famous Hans Peter Brommer-driven Carlsson-tuned rally 280CE seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhyeqJ9JVPI however time and budget constraints have put a damper on those plans due to the fact that I am moving to Arizona. It is in entirely original specification at this time, with the exception of an original AMG front spoiler. In respect to the car’s present daily usability, the electrical components are all working properly throughout the vehicle (instruments, lights, wipers, windows, sunroof, heater, etc...) except the radio, which is a Becker electronic type and the vacuum locking system. During the car’s service, they flushed and changed all fluids and filters throughout the vehicle, as well as replaced the shift bushings, distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, wires and performed a valve adjustment. This car has been retrofitted with A/C, and while the compressor does function, it will need a Freon recharge come spring. The clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced and the system bled, and the clutch itself is in fine condition with no chatter or slippage. The original European bumpers are still present, along with the original speedo head, calibrated in km/h. The front lamps were changed out in favor of the US-spec sealed beam type units, per the Carlsson rally car, and the original Euro lamps are not with the car any longer. The car starts on the button and runs very smoothly with plenty of power and that lovely sewing machine smoothness. It’s quite fun to drive in contrast to your typical slushbox-equipped US-spec car, and with very low production numbers, is hard to come by, either here or abroad, so if you’ve been looking for your very own blank slate from which to create a rally tribute or just to have a fun second car, here’s your chance to pick one up at a very reasonable price. I do advise that you ask questions and come see this car in person to make sure it is what you want before you bid. Shipping is the responsibility of the winning bidder but, I would be more than happy to help with loading of the car. I expect a $250.00 deposit through Paypal by the winning bidder within 48 hours after the auction has ended and the balance of the winning bid within 7 days after the auction has ended by cash in hand, bank transfer, or bank check from a major U.S. bank. Neither the car nor the clear Ohio title leaves my hands until all funds have cleared my bank. The car is for sale locally so I do reserve the right to end this auction early but, I will notify the highest bidder before doing so. To set up an inspection time or if you have any questions please feel free to call me at 513-617-9322 from 12:00pm to 9:00pm est. standard time. Thank you for taking the time to look. Cheers, Charlie
