Vehicle Detail

I purchased this original paint, rust-free Fairlane 500 wagon in 2001 with 56K original miles. A collector in southern Maryland purchased it after the original owners gave it to charity. The car had been sitting in their dry garage for a long time—that’s why the body and interior are so nice. It’s loaded with options: air, 302 V8, power disc brakes, power steering, Magic tailgate with power window, carpet, rear floor trunk with key, luggage rack, tinted glass, deluxe interior and AM radio. After I purchased it and started working on it in 2003, I drove it as a daily driver for 2 years. My plan was to keep this car forever. The engine runs perfectly with great power. I rebuilt the brakes with new master cylinder, rebuilt power brake booster, wheel cylinders, shoes/pads and silicone brake fluid. I also installed a new 3-row radiator w/fan shroud, coolant filter, new Moog ball joints, new belts, new hoses, new muffler and tailpipe. It had the original exhaust on it when I bought it. I installed grease fittings on the upper control arms. I aligned the front end and rebuilt the carb. It has new 15 inch radial TA tires and 1969 Shelby mag wheels. I installed the GT 500 stripes. I located an NOS front bumper which I installed. This car still has 3 of the original 4 Ford headlights. I installed an NOS 1984 Craig stereo with 4 speakers hidden inside the car. I rebuilt the steering box because it had some play. Ford did not lube these boxes correctly so put grease in them. This car steers and tracks PERFECTLY. It will smoothly eat highways at 80 MPH all day. And pickup is good for a wagon. The water pump and fuel pump were also new. I rebuilt the heater box with a new heater core and correctly rebuilt the air conditioning with new hose lines, new condenser, new modern Sandon compressor and new expansion valve. I have only needed to add Freon 12 once which was last summer. It also has an NOS heater control valve that sticks sometimes when switching from AC to heat from the long season. The air conditioning performance is awesome. The out flow air temp rolls down to below 30 degrees on a hot day!! I had to install a cutoff switch on the dash so the evaporator would not freeze over because the factory antifreeze switch, which works fine, was not keeping the evaporator from freezing at times. The air/heater fan motor is super quiet. It was a pleasure working on this car because it is so clean and fresh under the dash. I would just marvel at it sometimes under the dash. This wagon has had a good life. The paint is all original except for the driver front fender which I repainted. I had to repaint that fender from poor work done on it years ago and the paint match is now good. All gauges work including gas. The hood came open at some time and the rear corners are crimped. I had the power brake booster rebuilt and it went bad within a year and Booster Dewey repaired it for free. But now that booster is weak again when the car is warmed up good. The booster seems to loose 50% of its assist power so a rebuilt booster is in order again, but the booster is easy to service on this car because it is removed from under the hood. A Mustang booster is a pain because it is removed from under the dash. The car shifts good and there are no rattles I can think of. All the glass is excellent and original Ford. The Magic tailgate works nicely, but the electric window needs help up and down sometimes. I opened it up a few years ago and saw it needs a new nylon bushing. I made a quick repair to make it work, but the new bushing would be better. Rust is not a problem on this wagon. It has maybe tiny rust specks in spots (see pictures), but no rust through. The floors and rails are perfection with no rust ever. I cleaned and applied POR 15’s in all the doors and tailgate when I got this car. The cowl is also POR 15’s and perfect. This wagon starts always and runs smoothly. The engine is quiet with no smoke ever. The air conditioning will not disappoint you. The heater is fair compared to the air—I’m older now and heater performance counts. The steering wheel is centered while driving and this car just drives perfectly. The only problems are a power steering hose seeps and needs replacing; the power brake booster is weak (so be careful) when the car is very warm, it needs a new neutral safety switch (I have the switch set “on” now at the base of the steering column) and the radio works sometimes. The radio has an internal problem and I include in this auction a second NOS Craig radio to replace it. The chrome around the gauges and steering wheel is almost perfect. The steering wheel and dash are beautiful. The headliner is perfect. The interior shows only minor wear on the driver’s area. Doors all close nicely. Carpet is good for original. I just purchased another 1970 Eliminator project and I have too many projects and I just don’t drive this sweet wagon much anymore. The car needs to be waxed for a nice shine. Someone needs to love it more than I have the last several years. This car is sold “as is” and I expect full payment in 10-days. Any questions or to see in person call me Rick Barker at (301) 779-0114. My Junk Yard Dog is not included.
