Vehicle Detail
1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 VIN: WDBDA29D3KF563512 Im selling my 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6. This is a fantastic car. Its extremely solid, and drives like its on rails. Its ready to go as it is, or, with a little TLC, it can easily be restored to excellent condition. Ill try to list every fault Im aware of below, so the purchaser knows exactly what he or she is buying. The 190E has the chassis number 201.029, which is commonly known as W201. This car has the 2.6L In-line 6-cylinder SOHC 12V fuel-injected engine. (Engine No. 103.942.) This straight-six pulls extremely smoothly, and it has more power than the standard, 4-cylinder 190E engine models. It was factory rated at 158hp and 162lb-ft of torque. Its rear-wheel drive. It has a 4-speed automatic transmission, which shifts very smoothly. The factory fuel economy was measured at 19mpg city and 27mpg highway. The cars odometer currently reads 195,513 miles. It may have slightly more by the time of sale, since Ive been driving it around a bit lately. When I bought the car, the odometer wasnt functioning. I repaired it, so its working now. Because of this, I cant verify the actual mileage, and it reads EXEMPT on the title. The title is clear and currently an Idaho title. (Ive been driving it with a fleet plate, so its not currently registered and it will be sold without a plate. It will be the responsibility of the buyer to register the car.) The speedometer and trip-counter are also broken (see pictures), though the rest of the gauges in the instrument cluster work. I bought the car in September of 2009, and used it as a daily driver for about a year. It has been parked for the past few months. It drives really well. Its a very solid car. It would benefit from a new air-filter and perhaps new spark-plugs, but it has no trouble starting or driving. The engine light comes on occasionally (only recently), so it likely is time for a tune-up of the spark-plugs, et cetera. Ive used only premium fuel and have changed the oil regularly since I bought it. Aside from its CarFax report, Im not familiar with its history before I owned it. Ive been really happy with it. I have three older Mercedes, and I dont have a place to park this one, which is why its for sale. The CarFax history shows no reported accidents or damage. There is limited body damage on the rear quarter-panels (see pictures below). The exterior color is Light Ivory (hellelfenbein, paint code 623), which is a fantastic, period-appropriate color. The interior upholstery is MB-Tex, which ages significantly better than leather. The MB-Tex is Brazil Brown (code 173), which is a less common color that looks fantastic. The exterior and interior colors compliment each other really well. Its rare to find this color combination in a 190E. It looks really great. The exterior paint is in relatively good shape, with the exceptions of a few scratches, dents, and very little rust (all detailed below in the pictures). Additionally, a previous owner has painted a black stripe on both sides of the car, which I dont care for - since its not original. I had always planned on respraying this, but never got around to it. The interior is in fantastic shape. There are no cracks or tears in the upholstery, with the exception of a patch on the drivers seat (see pictures). There are a few cracks in the dash board, which is common for a Mercedes of this age; and there is a tear on the drivers-side door arm-rest (see picture below). There are also some cracks and two small chips in the wood-trim, but this is easy to repair. Aside from these few aberrations, the interior is very clean and in fantastic shape. It has the original floor-mats, which are a little sun-faded; but the carpet is clean and spotless. Its a very comfortable car to be in, and spacious for its size. The car has its original radio, which worked the last time I had it hooked up. I had a different radio in it, but Ill be selling it with the original Becker unit. It works as far as I know, but I didnt hook up the wiring when I put it back in. The antenna works, but doesnt retract and part of it is broken off (see pictures). The car has power steering. It has power locks, but the vacuum system might have a leak, because the system isnt working. It has power windows, which all worked up until a while ago. Now the drivers window is the only operating window, along with the moon-roof. Its likely a short or fuse issue with the others. It has a mono-wiper, which actually cleans more of the windshield than two wipers could. The A/C works, but needs a shot of R12 freon or conversion to newer freon. It blows a little cold, but not as cold as it should. It doesnt have any leaks or problems with the compressor; it just needs a shot of freon. The heater works well, though the fan squeals on occasion - not bad, though. The car has 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, which are still strong. The car has manual seats. All the exterior and interior lights work. The back-windshield brake light works, but the housing has broken with age (see pictures). It has a power passengers-side rear-view mirror, and a manual drivers-side. The windshield is cracked (see pictures). This might need to be replaced prior to registration, depending on your state of residence. The 2.6 body tag has fallen off (see pictures), but I have it in the glovebox; its an easy fix. The hydraulic lift under the hood has broken, but it still stays up just fine (see pictures). One other issue is the ignition (see pictures). It works fine, but it was starting to stick a little. Im aware of Mercedes of this era having problems, so I removed the ignition piece preƫmptively. Its in the glovebox. The car starts just fine with the key, but it could start with a screw-driver as well as long as the ignition piece is removed. The buyer could chose to reinstall the ignition piece, or replace it at a nominal charge from Mercedes. (When you replace it, it comes with the same key and includes a new key as well.) This is really a fantastic car. Its great for students, young families, or anybody that appreciates Mercedes. Ive tried to be completely upfront about all its faults. I hope it doesnt sound negative, because its still a great car. The buyer will really be happy with it. Please read the disclosures below all the pictures.
