Vehicle Detail
1976 AMC GREMLIN "X" FIRECRACKER RED BLACK TRIM & BLACK INTERIOR 4.2 Litre 6 / Chrysler TorqueFlite 3-Speed Automatic This X-Package Gremlin was from a 1-owner family as present owner inherited from his aunt as his first car when he was only 12 years old. It has been well loved and is in extremely solid & original condition. I could see no visible rust, paint & body is all original, original Gremlin X package black striping, all original running gear & more. There is a marking on the radiator support with the date of 11-11-75 which assume to be the original factory build mark still on the car. Please send your email and do ask for more photos & any details to be emailed. This Gremlin X is a fun car to drive and a strong runner. The engine runs smooth, burns clean & no smoke or oil discharge but valve cover gasket needs replacement, drives very straight & easy and the famous Chrysler AT transmission shifts very well. I drove this car home at highways speeds over 70MPH and the car handled fine and actually had lots of power. The owner had spent well over $2,000 in recent mechanical work and improvements this last year, which includes tune up, new factory exhaust manifold and quality factory styled raised white letter tires on the AMC 5-Slotted Rally Wheels ...in shiny & mint condition. The car has an amazing condition dash pad and lower shelf pad. There are some typical dents & scratches & wear on the car* ...being that this car is still very original condition and just over 44 years old!! *SEE photos: left front fender denting, right side door area scrape, small hood dent & rear top edge/rear side edges have paint wear-off from a former storage cover on the car. The original black X striping is faded but new striping kits are available for about $150-. The car has torn front seat covers on the buckets, which are not original to the car, crack in windshield but all other glass looks good including back window. Windows do work, door hinges need inexpensive washers/rebuild kits. The owner had added a guage package and a high end, quality tach on the steering column ...which lights up and works very well. The headlights, driving lights and most dash items were in working order, the fan switch was gone but a flip switch under the dash had replaced it so it does work. The factory AM/FM radio worked and sounded great! The steering wheel has been replaced by a smaller GT Style wheel. The factory steering wheel and a box of many parts are still with the car and included with the sale... including the front wheel as mentioned & I do believe the ashtray missing from the dash ...+PLUS+ Gremlin/AMC mechanical guide books AND the Factory Owners Manual & original owners papers still in the glovebox. The odometer reads under 40,000 miles, but owner is not sure of the exact (possible low mileage when inherited?) & actual mileage unknown. New OEM style black carpeting was installed a few years ago. The gremlin is still equipped with the dual racing mirrors, which do need remounting. Please do look at photos in the rear trunk compartment showing original paint & no rust, the original spare tire and AMC factory spare tire cover. This car also has the Power Steering option making it fun & very easy to drive. This is a fully optioned 2 door sedan/coupe Gremlin Custom, with X package and optional Floor Shift AT, 3 speed Chrysler TorqueFlite, behind the larger & more power powerful 4.2 Litre (258ci) 6 Cylinder engine, which gives lots of torque and plenty of power while still obtaining excellent gas mileage according to articles found on the internet; some of which are pasted below. It also has the new 1976 optioned AMC Slotted Rally Wheels. It is in one of the best, and most desirable, factory color packages, bright AMC Firecracker Red with Black Trim and Black Interior !! THANK YOU & Good Luck Bidding! The 1976 Gremlin sported a restyled grille and headlight ensemble, as well as new front side marker lights. The "X" package side stripes, while maintaining the same basic "hockey stick" design as the previous two years, was revised so that a portion of the stripe jutted straight back over the wheel arch. The "Gremlin X" designation appeared in this portion of the stripe.NEW OPTION for 1976: Aluminum 5 Slot Rally Wheels. Gremlins are interesting cars to drive. They are very maneuverable and have tight turning circles, though cars equipped with non-power steering require a lot of wheel-winding when parallel parking. With a short, 96-inch wheelbase, they tend to give a slightly choppy ride, but the wide track endows them with a degree of stability which most of the Gremlin's small car contemporaries lacked, especially at highway speed. Six-cylinder Gremlins, while not rip-roaring performance machines, have a lot of low-RPM grunt and manage to give very respectable acceleration up to highway speeds. The low stress, big displacement sixes simply don't have to work very hard at pushing the little Gremlin around. They do run out of breath at higher speeds, though by that time, you are far enough ahead of the rest of the small car pack that you can afford to back off. Gremlins did have a few weak spots. Like most of their AMC siblings, they had a tendency to rust. Rocker panels and the tops of the front fenders seemed especially corrosion-prone. And, of course, no Gremlin description would be complete without mention of the rear seat torture chamber. This one item helped to keep the chiropractic industry afloat during the 1970s. On Jan-15-11 at 15:23:56 PST, seller added the following information: UPDATE + Added Info on this 1976 Gremlin X .… I do hope this covers most of the questions as asked THIS Gremlin has an ALL NEW factory styled Exhaust & Muffler system installed!! …I have also looked and taken more photos under car and other areas of the car. This car is extremely solid and not a rust car! I am not a mechanic or shop, but we have owned & restored many vintage classic & collector cars. I saw the car had dry window rubber at base of both door windows; which should be easily replaced. On the passenger side door I noted 2 small areas of very minimal under paint bubble at the corners. It’s minor and not at all noticeable as a fun driver; but if car is repainted these small areas will need minor repair. I saw no evidence of any rust areas or rusting under car or in wheel wells. It appears this car had a factory, or dealer added, undercoating to help preserve the car. This area of the NW does not use salt on the road, we are not a salty ocean area either, so cars can be well preserved if they are garaged or kept under cover …like this one has had most of its life. This is an AMC Firecracker Red stock paint color as the Data Plate identifies this Gremlin. The original Data Plate, 1976 Emission Standards sticker and the American Motor Corp MFD sticker showing manufacture date of OCT 1975, are all still on driver’s door. The Factory DATA PLATE reads as follows: BODY: H02522 (assigned during assembly; not VIN) MODEL: 7646-5 (Custom 2-dr) TRIM: 6010 (verifies 1976 + stock Black Interior; Last 0 is seat type) PAINT: 6P (verifies this is a factory “Firecracker Red” AMC Paint) ALSO INCLUDED are the original Owner’s Manual & Warranty Book plus the original Plastic Warranty Card …along with original dealership & bank financing papers, original registration papers and many, many years of registration papers for the car. Thanks for all the Questions & Interest … & Good Luck Bidding!
