Vehicle Detail
Due to a non-paying bidder I am re-listing this car for some friends who are forced to sell it because of financial circumstances (and who are not "computer literate"). It is a Gorgeous Customized 1701 4-door sedan which was apparently sold by the California Packard dealer, Earle C. Anthony, since it has the armless "flying lady" ornament that he sometimes put on his cars. It was either he who customized the car or a subsequent owner, as two-toning was not an option on a '39 Packard and neither was the chromed radiator housing. The owner believes that it was probably a former owner (rather than Mr. Anthony) for these reasons: 1) there are small imperfections in the radiator that were chromed over, and 2) the original upholstery has been covered over with black naugahyde or something similar, and the door panels with a black 'mohair' type fabric. It is believed that the headliner (which is a "slate" color [greyish blue] - rather than tan as it appears in the photos) was not changed, which might give an idea as to the original color of the interior. Other than those exceptions it is all original and in Very Good condition with no rust issues (either inside, outside or underneath). It had an early "restoration"car before the current owner bought it 25-30 years ago and has only been driven around 10,000 miles since then, and has always been garaged. It is a "good driver" (it has a very smooth and comfortable ride) with a 3-speed manual column shift and straight eight engine. It has chrome spoked wheels on it (which came from a '55 Packard Caribbean), but the original wheels with beauty rings (which have been boxed up since the car was purchased) are also included. The owner says that the biased ply tires are correct for this model/year car and have approx. 75% of their life left. The only significant flaws are minor chips to the black lacquer paint, a spot on the back passenger side fender where the paint is cracked (it's about 4" across and looks like a spider web), and an edge-to-edge crack in the center passenger side window. It has not been smoked in, eaten in (or spoken to roughly :-) since the current owner bought it. The engine is super clean and runs well, with no leaks or smoking. The oil and battery were changed by the owner within the last month, and the transmission fluid was changed about a year ago (and has been driven only a few miles since then). All of the windows work, as do all of the gauges except for the temperature gauge. The doors lock. The clock works. The brakes are fine. The radio came on while it was sitting in the garage, but no station came in. The car did not have a heater as it came originally from the manufacturer - but an original heater is included in the auction in case the buyer is interested in having it installed. The mileage stated is what is showing on the odometer, but since it only has a maximum of 5 digits, it is unknown if the accumulated mileage has "wrapped". Included in the sale are: the heater (which has a fan and louvered doors); the original wheels; a brake kit - including brake shoes, springs and rebuild kits for all four wheel cylinders; a car cover; the original 1938/39 Shop Manual that came with the car; a Packard Parts Interchange Manual; and other Packard-related literature. Since we have already had a problem with a non-paying bidder (who was fairly new to eBay), if you have a feedback score of lower than 25 please contact me before bidding - otherwise I may choose to cancel your bid. Please also be aware that because of the length of the car (it has a 127" wheel base) it will not fit on a "standard" (U-haul type) car carrier. The buyer will need to either fly to Humboldt County and drive the car home, or hire a professional car transport company. If you have any questions regarding the car please do not hesitate to contact me and I will relay it to the sellers, or you may be able to speak to them on the phone.
