Vehicle Detail

This is a 1964 1/2 2 owner Mustang Convertible. We have a clear title in hand. I bought it in 2004 as a birthday gift for my girlfriend. I was told but never verified that I bought it from the original owner. He was a B movie producer from Hollywood. I initially thought that it might have the original motor which according to the VIN was supposed to be a 262 cubic inch V8. We later learned that it actually has in it a 289 V8 from 1966. The motor runs great and appears to be mostly original. I just had the original Motorcraft 4100 carb rebuilt. The guy who rebuilt the carb says that the 4100 was a fantastic carb and a little research on the web confirmed that. The transmission runs great as well. In fact the car would be great with a total restoration but it runs well enough to drive everyday. I put a new aluminum radiator in it right after we got it. I also changed all the hoses, the battery and a few of the interior trim pieces because they were dull or faded. The car was originally a four wheel drum brake car with no power brake booster. In spring of 2010 I converted it to a generic brand front disc brake system with a new master cylinder and power booster. I bought the system from Sacramento Mustang and they tell me that the parts that make up this system are direct replacement parts from the original type of disc brakes offered on Mustangs. I'm told that you can buy pads and parts for this brake system at most retail parts stores. This brake system is NOT a performance brake system but it is a ton better than drum brakes! When I converted the brakes I also rebuilt the entire front suspension. See the photos. This rebuild included new Scott Drake upper and lower controls arms, all new ball joints, new tie rods, all new bushings everything else under there except I used the original coil springs. All the new parts came painted or powder coated and what few of the old parts that were re-used I had powder coated as well. The front end on this car is virtually all brand new and has less than 200 miles on it! I also put a new oversized sway bar on the front and rear as well as all new performance shocks on all 4 corners. The interior is in fair to good shape. I think it is original. There are no tears or wear spots. There is one small spot on the drivers seat were the seam stitching is stretching. The carpet is frayed slightly in a few small spots. But overall the interiors is in very good condition. But I would not call it show condition. The convertible top is not the original. It is a much heavier than original replacement. Unfortunately, the rear window seam has broken (see photo). But this part of the top zips out and can be replaced without replacing the whole top. The top is a power top and the lifts work like new. The convertible top and door windows do need to be adjusted to fit better than they do now. They leak some air at highway speeds. The body is in extremely good condition for a car that has obviously never been restored. It is however obvious that this car has been re-painted at least once and there is evidence that the original color may have been burgundy instead of the orangish red that it is now. The paint has chips in several places. This car does need to be restored if you want it to be a show quality car. The body sheet metal is in great condition and fits pretty well. There is however some paint bubbles along the rocker area at the bottom of the doors. This indicates rust under the paint. I don't think it is severe rust that has gone all the way through the metal. It looks like a pretty easy restoration. (I have restores 7 Camaros so I can tell when it is bad or not.) Overall on a scale of 1 to 100 and rating it as an unrestored car that is an excellent candidate for a makeover I would rate this car between 70 and 80. 100 would be an already restored car and 10 would be a rust bucket throw away. I hate to see it go. But finances dictate that it must go. Happy Bidding!
