Vehicle Detail
I am listing this car for some friends who are forced to sell it due to financial circumstances (and who are not "computer literate"). It is a Gorgeous 1700 series 4-door sedan. Although the owner rarely drives it, it is a "good driver" with a smooth and comfortable ride, a 3 speed manual column shift and straight eight engine. It has the original chrome spoked wheels on it, but wheels with beauty rings are also included. It had an early restoration before the current owner bought it around 30 years ago and has been garaged since then. It is ALL original and in Very Good condition with no rust, etc, although there are minor chips to the black lacquer paint, and the center passenger side window is cracked. It has not been smoked in, eaten in, etc. since the current owner bought it. The engine is super clean and runs well, with no leaks or smoking. The oil and battery were changed by the owner within the last month, and the transmission fluid was changed about a year ago (and the car has not been driven since then). All of the windows work, as do all of the gauges except for the temperature gauge. The doors lock. The clock works. The radio came on while it was sitting in the garage, but no station came in. The car did not have a heater as it came originally from the manufacturer - but an original heater is included in the auction in case the buyer is interested in having it installed. The mileage stated is what is showing on the odometer, but since it only has a maximum of 5 digits, it is unknown if the accumulated mileage has "wrapped". A car cover will be included in the sale, along with a few miscellaneous parts. I will get with the sellers sometime within the next week to take additional photos which will then be added to the listing. If you have any questions regarding the car please do not hesitate to contact me and I will relay it to the sellers, or you may be able to speak to them on the phone. On Dec-20-10 at 20:02:51 PST, seller added the following information: Since I wrote the above description I have learned some new details about the car. It appears that it is actually a "customized", rather than a "restored" model 1701 (for more info from someone who is very knowledgeable about Packards, please scroll all the way down the page and read the "Questions and answers about this item"). The current owner believes that it was probably customized by a former owner (rather than the original dealer) for these reasons: 1) there are imperfections in the radiator that were chromed over, and 2) the original upholstery was covered over with black naugahyde or something similar, and the door panels were covered with a black "mohair" type fabric. It is believed that the headliner (which is a light "slate" [greyish] blue, rather than tan as it appears in my photos) was not changed which would probably give an idea as to the original color of the interior. Here are some additional details about the car: The original wheels are actually the ones with the beauty rings which are included in the sale. They have been boxed up for MANY years. The wheels that are on the car now came from a '55 Packard Caribbean. The owner states that the biased ply tires are correct for this year car and have approx. 75% of their life left. As mentioned above the current owner has had the car for a little under 30 years. In that time he thinks he probably put about 10,000 miles on the car. The brakes work fine. When I went over to take photos of the car, I only noticed two "significant" flaws (keep in mind though that I am NOT a car enthusiast - see my "About Me" page) - the crack in the side passenger window mentioned above, and cracking of the paint on the passenger side rear fender that resembled a 4" long spider web (possibly caused when the suicide door was somehow opened too far, although it is not able to open that far now). And here is a list of items that come with the car (some were already mentioned in the original description): a car cover; an original heater with fan and louvered doors; a brake kit-including brake shoes, all springs, and rebuild kits for all wheel cyclinders; the original wheels; the original 1938/39 Shop Manual that came with the car; a Packard Parts Interchange Manual, and other Packard-related literature.
