Vehicle Detail
1970 VW Beetle Convertible WITH A/C General Summary – The car had a frame off restoration, which was completed around March 2002. It was not just a gloss over job. The restoration took 1 ½ years to complete. The car was TOTALLY disassembled and all new floor pans, convertible rails, etc. were put in. Almost every bolt on the car was removed and inspected then cleaned or replaced. Each component was gone through. The car was then reassembled. The entire floor pan, I-beam and suspension components were coated with POR15 rust preventative so future rust will not be a problem. The entire body and wiring was removed. The car was bead blasted and any rust was cut out and new panels put in place. Pictures of the restoration process were taken and the photo album will be included with the car. The car has been garage kept ever since and has had about 5,000 miles put on it since restoration. Everything on the car works including the horn, door buzzer and heaters. THIS IS A NICE VW. It rides smooth and runs great. It can be driven any distance without worry and with the A/C it can be done comfortably. Air Conditioning – The air conditioning is an aftermarket unit that fits under the dash and looks natural there. You can see it in the pictures. It cools the car well and draws very little horsepower. It uses a modern day compressor that is belt driven from the engine. This system only draws 2 to 3 horsepower when on instead of the 12 to 15 that the factory compressors drew. This means better gas mileage and the engine still has plenty of power with the A/C on. This is a great addition as the system is reliable and lets you enjoy the car even when the weather is a little too warm. If you are ever caught in the rain just put the top up turn the air on and keep driving. Body – The body was completely removed and bead blasted. Any rust was cut out and the panel was replaced. The paint job is smooth. The whole car was floated in order to insure a smooth paint finish. The paint shines glossy and is in excellent shape. The car looks just as good in person as it does in the pictures. That being said…there are two areas on the car that I am not completely happy with and want to mention. They are the hood and spare tire area. As show in the pictures there is a small gap were the hood meets the body in the front fender area. The gap isn’t big and it doesn’t affect the closing of the hood but it is there and I want to mention it just the same. The second is the spare tire area. When the front nose clip (the area the spare tire sits down into) was replaced the alignment was off just a little. The result was that the spare tire fits very tightly into the cradle and in order to have the hood close properly the small rail the seal rides in had to be cut. However, the seal is still there and functional. Without being told this nobody would notice but I want whoever gets the car to be completely happy with it and I don’t want anyone feeling as though I didn’t disclose something to them. There is also a small dent in the bottom of the driver’s door (see picture). This is the result of someone losing a foot long piece of 2x4 on the highway, the front tire catching it and it flipping up and hitting the door. Not a big dent but again…it needed to be mention. Interior – Everything is new. Carpet, Seat covers, Padding, Seat belts, Etc. The interior is like new. It has the following upgrades that can be removed in not wanted: Center Console Kenwood Radio w/ cassette (stock two post style so the dash was NOT cut) Kenwood 12 disc CD changer with remote. Pioneer amp Front passenger kick panel speaker (this is a panel the fits in the passenger side foot well to allow for a speaker without having to cut on the body panels). Kenwood 6” speakers mount under the rear seat Pioneer 6 x 9 speakers mounted on the back deck (behind the rear seat over the storage area) The stereo is not a boom system it was put in to enable the passengers to hear the radio while the top is down. As you bug enthusiasts know they only had a little 2 ½ inch speaker in the drivers side of the dash. Not enough for a convertible. Top – The top is vinyl and was replaced when restored. It looks new just like the rest of the car. Engine – The engine also has about 5,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt when the car was restored 8 years ago. The engine was completely rebuilt by a German mechanic that actually owns a VW shop in Germany. He really knows his stuff. Here are the details on the engine: Standard bore 1600cc with the dual port heads. Petronix Electronic Ignition (fits inside the distributor and replaces the old points and condenser system). This can easily be removed if you prefer the points and condenser. Easy fill oil filler neck 3 ½ Quart Oil pan (attaches to the bottom of the engine and looks factory original) to increase the amount of oil for better engine cooling and longer engine life. Billet oil drain plate. Remote oil filter (this uses a regular modern day oil filter from a Volkswagen Rabbit or Gulf, etc.) This means you don’t have to remove the whole bottom plate in order clean that little filter. Much better system for a longer engine life. Electronic Fuel Pump (this is mounted in the original manual pump location. The manual pump can be place back on it in a matter of minutes if preferred) All upgrades to the engine are bolt on and can easily be removed in a matter of a couple of hours if a total stock system is your goal. All upgrades were added for reliability and extension of engine life. Tires & Wheels & Brakes– The tires are also in very good shape and the wheels are the traditional 8 spoke wheels colored keyed to match the car. The brakes were completely gone through and operate great. No pulling or grabbing. Basically this car runs and drives like new. All components have been gone through and now look and function as well if not better than they did from the factory. The car is 40 years old and is a Volkswagen Beetle so please keep that in mind. This is not a muscle car. It is a very nice beetle and I am sure you will not be disappointed.
