1998 Volkswagen new Beetle TDI manual. 45-50 miles per gallon on the highway. 157000 miles. Installed Greasecar fuel system ($1000 value) allowing vehicle to run on diesel, biodiesel, or vegetable oil in 2008. Vehicle initially ran great on all fuels but developed fuel system problems. After fuel system repair work including disconnecting the Greasecar fuel system (it is still installed but disconnected) the vehicle ran but idled rough and surged under power. Mechanic's diagnosis is that fuel injection pump needs to be replaced. Two weeks ago driving on the freeway the engine died and a small fire started around the starter damaging the starter and the starter wiring harness. No other fire damage is evident even in nearby plastic components. The vehicle currently does not start or run and the battery is dead. Other than the fueling issues the compression has been checked and is up to spec indicating that the engine itself is not damaged. The rest of the car is in good condition. The body is free from dents. The transmission shifts well. The alignment is good. The brakes work well. The paint shows typical wear. The interior is fully functional but shows typical wear.
