I will attempt to answer as many questions as possible in the following description, so please read this entire listing carefully. If you have any questions or require additional information please don't hesitate to email me at gearhead5483@yahoo.com or phone me at (412) 518-0127 ask for Joe. Please don't hesitate to schedule an appointment to inspect the car prior to the last 24 hours of the auction. Schedule your appointment during day light hours as soon as possible because I am also offering the car with a ridiculously low buy it now price as well as making the car available for sale locally and I therefore reserve the right to end the auction early. I've been employed and have taught in the automotive field for 37+ years. I’ve had an ASE master certification since the days when it was known as NIASE National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and have enjoyed passionately, restoring antique, classic era and numerous muscle cars. I've sold any number of classic and collector cars and parts on eBay and elsewhere including sales to overseas customers and always pride myself on their satisfaction. This iconic Chevrolet was to be my final project. She would be perfect for that trip to the Dairy Queen, the local cruise, county fair or drive in theater. OK I'm dated but you get the point, the one that you love and keep. I found her about 6 years ago being sold to satisfy an estate in upstate New York. My personal knowledge of this cars history is limited to what I was told prior to my purchase. I was told that some years earlier their father had similarly purchased the car from its then owners in rural West Virginia where to their knowledge it had spent its entire life. After buying the car he had it delivered to his home in upstate New York where he had planned to restore it but was unable to do so prior to his passing. Unfortunately therefore, I do not have a paper trail of documents to substantiate the cars history prior to my purchase, so please don't ask. Since purchasing the car these are the facts historically and otherwise to which I can attest as a result of my own experience, investigation, physical inspection, examinations and repairs. This is not a new car. It is not a perfect mint condition museum piece. This is not its original paint, but the original two tone paint combination of India Ivory and Canyon Coral are there directly beneath the current green metallic paint. The car is not currently running and cannot be driven at present due to removal of the engine and transmission for servicing (more on that later). I can find no evidence (anywhere) of this cars having ever been involved in an accident. Nowhere have I found any body putty or plastic in the car. From everything that I can and have seen this car is incredibly straight and true. Except for three small areas the car is cancer free and that is unheard of in a car of this vintage and having spent any portion of its life in the north east geographic region of the US. The three small areas of rust are. One: Two small spots approximately 14 inches square and roughly centered on the floor boards directly beneath where the driver and passenger would have rested their wet snow covered boots, where moisture would have been absorbed directly through the carpet. The sheet metal in these two areas is generally weakened with pin holes and some rust through on the drivers side they are the worst rust on the car and a very easy repair. Two: Is a small area of rust through approximately 8 inches in length shaped like an L and located in the extreme lower left corner of the rear valance panel directly beneath the tail gate. Three: Consists of a couple of small bubbled spots in the extreme lower corners of the outer door skins. It should be noted that there is no rust through on any of the doors or tailgate and they are rock solid. Aside from these three specified locations, almost the entire underside of the car is covered with a light film of surface rust, emphasis on light film, no rust through. How is this possible you ask and so did I? What I found and believe to be the reason for this remarkable level of preservation follows. First, the extremely low mileage 26,963 miles (yes the odometer works) and although I have no paper trail to prove this is the actual mileage, 4 decades of automotive experience tells me it is. I've seen hundreds of indications on this car that this is the actual mileage and none to the contrary. For example, all of the pivot points in the steering linkage and suspension (tie rod ends, center link, pittman arm and control arm bushings) are as tight as can be and show no signs of wear and tear. Ball joints are like new and have their original factory rivets in place. Once rivets were removed when replacing a ball joint they were replaced with bolts, nuts and lock washers. It is also note worthy that bolts and nuts in locations that warranted additional safety precautions still had their original factory safety wiring in place and this is always one of the first things to go as a car aged and had parts replaced. So all things being equal, a car with 26 as opposed to 126 or 226 thousand miles would naturally have less wear and tear and thus be better preserved. Second and certainly unusual, I found that virtually every square inch, nook, cranny and crevice of the underside of this car was coated with a thick almost impenetrable layer of clay. I chipped, chiseled, scraped, wire brushed and pressure washed the car for days to remove no less than 4 banana crates of this material from the car. I would estimate somewhere between 500 and 700 pounds of this encapsulating clay was removed. The amazing preservative effect of the clay was as if the entire car had been repeatedly Rust Proofed by Mother Nature. When I purchased the car it would start right up and run fairly smoothly with no smoking as if needing a tune up and there was some evidence of overheating. Close inspection revealed typical problems like gasket and seal leaks, casting plugs (freeze plugs) rusting through etc. Since it was my plan to do an original restoration I pulled the engine and transmission to confirm their condition and replace gaskets, seals and service as needed. While apart I've confirmed that all part numbers, factory identifiers, casting numbers, casting dates, production lines etc. are all correctly matching and consistent with the cars VIN number, body and trim tags and production date etc. I’ll let you do your own homework but most if not all of these numbers and identifiers can be seen in the pictures available to you on this listing and through the link to 600 high def pictures at my off eBay web hosting sight. There are 5 albums there and you ca view them full page or slide show whatever you want just check them out its the next best thing to being there. Use this link http://tri5.multiply.com/photos The engine and transmission currently remain out of the car and engine is partially disassembled as can be seen in the photos. It is cleaned and ready to be reassembled. When looking at the photos, notice that the cross hatch pattern on the cylinder walls is still clearly visible. There are virtually no carbon deposits on the pistons and there is no ridge wear at the top of the cylinders, all indications of a very low mileage auto. The missing transmission linkage has been acquired and is ready to be reinstalled. Every single brake component has been gone over, cleaned, rebuilt, replaced and adjusted as necessary to restore the brake system to 100% functionality. Steering and suspension have been cleaned, lubricated, bearings repacked and seals replaced. When I purchased the car the ignition lock was damaged and door locks needed replaced due to lost keys. Since then I’ve located purchased and installed a complete set of 5 excellent original factory locks all 5 are keyed alike for simplicity. From an electrical stand point everything I could see worked. There is an exhaust leak that will be easily repaired by replacing the exhaust manifold studs, heat riser and gaskets. Two of the flat glass windows are cracked but functional and are also inexpensive, readily available and easily replaced. The original interior is complete and in excellent condition except for the linoleum cargo floor liner which is deteriorated and currently replaced by a non factory carpet. Additionally I never received the 2 seat cushions for the third fold up jump seat. Why would I sell this car, a totally fair question? Life frequently throws us curve balls. I am a severely disabled veteran and my wife of 3+ decades is seriously ill and has been totally bedridden for three years. I need to purchase a good used low mileage late model shuttle bus with wheel chair lift and a back door that I can equip for her needs to get her out of the house while we may still have that opportunity. It’s just that simple. The bottom line is simply this, if you are looking for a quality 57 Chevy Wagon to restore or rod I don’t believe you can find a better candidate for the price or condition of this one.
