Vehicle Detail
1979 Thunderbird Town Landau. Anyone who followed these cars in their heyday will know that the Town Landau came with most options as standard equipment. It also had several styling standard features as well, including a stainless steel roof wrapover – 2 piece vinyl top – color insert hood ornament, and the beautiful gold Cast Aluminum wheels (turbine). Only a few items were not standard and of that list this car includes the HUGE maroon tinted power moonroof, Illuminated Entry System, and the automatic Climate Control. It has a power six way driver seat and a 351 cubic inch engine. Odometer shows 20,117 miles – title shows "mileage exempt" due to how old the car is. I am never good at describing condition as I expect certain things when I purchase a "driver" of this age…….. with this in mind I will try to touch on everything and expect you to ask any questions you may have for clarification. The A/C works great, it has the automatic temperature control, and the only thing I have had to replace is the radiator. The drivers’ window, moonroof, etc work fine, the passenger window and the driver door lock need fixed. The interior is original and needs no attention; the headliner is fine except the passenger rear corner has started to droop. It runs smooth and shifts fine. Headlamp doors open and close fine – they do drift open overnight. I have been told the vacuum reservoir is missing, the jokingly black painted coffee can the factory installed under the hood……..? I cannot find this part anywhere. The car is in very nice driver condition. There is no rust in the body that I can see, if so it is very little and hard to find, the frame is weathered, normal for a car this old. All center caps and the hood ornament are in place. It has not been restored, but has been repainted and has a replacement Auto Zone 351 W engine that was installed in July of ‘99. This engine has always had Mobil One used in it. It has a spot behind the door, approx. a 4" circle – I didn’t even notice it until the sun was shining on it just right one day. I believe it was a repair spot after the repaint. You can tell there is some rust under the two piece vinyl top. There are a few light scratches, I think the car would benefit greatly from a buff job. I don’t want to sell the car but I just don’t have the time to spend on it right now. It has nice tires with whitewalls that were popular for the era, also has a factory am/fm cassette player. Basically without lifting a finger this could be a very nice driveable car that you would not be ashamed to take to a car show. Overall it is just a fun car to get out and cruise in. You won’t find a car like this anymore – the super long hood – huge trunk space – it just makes a statement. I love cars and have several – problem is I don’t have enough storage space and I don’t want these cars to sit outside. I have already sold a ’76 Lincoln Mark IV, and a LeBaron convertible, and am thinking about putting the money towards a 2000 era Jeep Wrangler and gain some storage space in the process. This is what stands out to me as I look at and drive the car – any questions whatsoever about anything I may have missed – please feel free to email and ask questions….. This Thunderbird is a great car for the collector or just a thunderbird fan, runs and drives very nice, you could take it on vacation, store it, or use it as a daily driver. Check out the "blue book" values on these cars, they are still selling for less than that amount so buy now before the price skyrockets, and while the parts are still available (most anyway) – doesn’t need a lot, but in case you would want to buy any spare parts. VIN is 9G87H281740 All the usual disclaimers apply – must be picked up within 2 weeks of auctions end – buyer to provide shipping or transportation arrangements and no warranty included or implied. Thanks for looking!
